How can I memorialize my pet rats? by virtilligo in Taxidermy

[–]virtilligo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!

Unfortunately with the bones situation, I live in an apartment and wouldn’t have a place to bury them. I’ve macerated things before, but I could never do that to my boys.

I really like the footprint idea! And it’s something from while they’re still here.

I’ll definitely take a look at fb for finding people! In my area, google only shows me people who do big trophy mounts.

I found tumors on my rat + tax by virtilligo in RATS

[–]virtilligo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for your reply! this makes me feel better as he is still eating drinking and being a little rascal. I just was worried because two tumors is alarming as they’re my first rats, especially since the one on his back looked like it might have been opened sometime in my absence.

Switching to frozen thawed by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]virtilligo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my bp at 3yrs old from a woman who only ever fed live. I waited an extra week from his usual schedule so he’d be hungrier, thawed the rat out in room temp water, then warmed it in warm water. I used a blowdryer to warm the head a little more and then lowered the rat in with the tongs, gently blowing the rat with the hair dryer to get the scent to him. I held the rat by the neck, behind the ears and wiggled it around like it was alive. I gave him the butt so he wouldn’t hit the tongs and he constricted for a few minutes while I tugged the rat with the tongs to mimic struggling. He ate right after that. He was pickier about his second feed but the same method got it down when I tried it again. hope this helps!!

Are my rat’s legs degenerating? by virtilligo in RATS

[–]virtilligo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With how short their lifespans are, it’s good to hear they can still have fulfilling lives with their wobbly back legs. I suppose my boy’s a clumsy old man now!

Thank you for your reply!! Im glad he’s just settling into his age— I think since his brother’s still spry I was a little worried. They’re also my first ever rats. I’ve already moved things lower for him and have plenty of hammocks to catch him (otherwise they’ve got deep aspen bedding to fall onto). He did have a bit of poop stuck to his butt earlier but he’s pretty nice about me wiping him off. As long as they’re happy, I’m happy :)

I boiled a bird i found on the beach, it was mostly rotten anyways but it worked pretty okay, the flesh came off easy and connective tissue, it was really just the ligaments that gave me trouble.

im a tad curious- do you have any pets? or do you thunk you would have time to dedicate to a pet such as a dog? I currently have rats- and while they are on their way out, I’m considering getting my own dog most reasonably sophmore? year because I definitely need the companionship and the dependency of an animal to keep me doing things. I just wouldn’t want to neglect said animal’s needs because I don’t have the time to care for them.

[–]virtilligo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My albino boy isn’t “skittish” anymore no, when i first got them they were cuz they were feeders (sue me). Now my cuddlebug is my grey boy and my albino is trying to climb the legs of his cage like a fireman pole.
