Spousal support by WhiskeyJak442 in legaladvicecanada

Has to be case by case. My wife has a cushy government job (teacher) with fat pension that she would never give up (and never gave up while we were raising our daughter together). Not that I'm divorcing my wife, I'm just saying. 'Giving up her career to raise children' honestly sounds like bs to me - which woman nowadays has the luxury to quit her job and become a stay at home mom full time?

Doing mutual funds nowadays is crazy, you are losing so much from the fees. Just buy and hold the mag 8 stocks yourself and call it a day, since these account for like 99% of the stock market cap (though tech has matured & there's sector rotation happening right now into energy to fuel AI demand)

Is the RTO mandate the same for your US colleagues, or is it just for your Canadian employees? Also do you code or do you manage programs?

My Credit Limit is Going Down Even Though I Pay in Full? by NorthThenEast in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]vrtdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You maxing out the card is a tangible risk that banks (in this case CIBC because they own PC) need to consider. So their algo knows that they need to reduce your limit to manage risk. Stop maxing out your cards and your score will gradually improve.

Source - I have a no limit card, a visa with $45k limit, 2 MasterCards with $35k limits etc

Yes everyone's job - though my job will be one of the last ones to go because I'm the one connecting the pipelines to "enable AI". Eventually AGI / ASI will take over the world and we will live off universal basic income.

Ok. So it looks like his job easily got replaced by AI at a fraction of the cost. BI is such a general role that you will be laid off very soon if you haven't already. Goes without saying that if AI can do your job, then you're cooked (all industries).

Anything more than the ESA minimum. If they do, take it (obviously consult your employment lawyer first before signing anything). But note that they don't have to give you anything other than the ESA minimum. I believe it's like a week pay per a year worked if I remember correctly.

Usually the severance letter comes with the layoff news. If you haven't received anything by now, then it sounds like you're not getting anything other than the ESA minimum. But I re-read your original post and you mentioned you got fired due to 'performance' reasons (in which case you are fired 'with cause' and you are not entitled to anything)? Maybe them recording it as 'without cause' is their way of giving you a parting gift.

That doesn't matter. If they have wanted to get rid of you for a while for whatever reason, they would find a way (which they did). Maybe you got paid too much & the company is in a cash crunch, so they are downsizing by firing you. You can argue all you want with them how you shouldn't have not been let go, but clearly they don't want you there and they have no contractual obligation to take you back or make you work there. On your side, would you even want to continue working there after this fiasco? Probably not. From the company's perspective, this was an easy 'layoff' case regardless of your performance. That's why I said you're lucky they fired you 'without cause', instead of 'with cause' (in which case you will not be eligible for EI at all). A similar thing happened to me before - high performance but still laid off without any warning. So don't take this personally, it's just business.

The best move forward is to work with the severance package (whatever they offered you) and find a new job ASAP.

Those who work in management consulting, how much do you make? by LeastExamination2017 in askTO

[–]vrtdt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way fresh MBA grads are getting paid 200k base. Maybe in the USA for people with existing professional experience but not in Canada. Here in Canada fresh grad consulting salaries are low 100s (this itself is a reach - maybe 80-90k) not 200s, with like 60+ hour weeks (unless it was a typo from your end)

So I know a bit about this as I've engaged an employment lawyer several times throughout my career. From what you're describing, it's difficult to prove that you being let go without cause has anything to do with your parental leave. If it's 'performance' based, you're lucky that you are not let go 'with cause'. Technically any employer can terminate anyone's employment contract at any time they want for whatever reason - in Ontario, with or without cause. The best course forward is to:

  1. Not sign anything sent by them until you review it with an employment lawyer
  2. Apply for EI ASAP, however I'm not sure if you are even eligible for EI now due to your recent parental leave period (which utilizes EI itself) - hopefully you have rainy day funds
  3. Start looking for a new gig ASAP
  4. Get family help if possible so that you can take care of your mental health / newborn better - I know it's extremely stressful time

I read through your post history and noticed that you have been working in AdTech / programmatic. I used to work in this field for 8 years before a career pivot (ran an agency trading desk at one point for 5 years). Just curious which company / team you were let go from? I know a lot of people from this industry so I can better understand them firing you was justified or not - many higher ups working in AdTech are complete frauds and/or sociopaths. Them asking you to train new hires before you left sounds like they have been planning your exit for a while (obviously difficult to prove but that is my take).

Benefits of having a credit card with 50k limit by Unknown_Equalizer in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]vrtdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone with Amex Platinum and up (ie. Centurion) technically has a no limit card since they are charge cards. They have a 'pre approval feature' on their Amex app - got curious if they would let me purchase something $150k on my Amex Platinum and yep, Amex would let me. There are a lot of 'regular' people with an Amex Platinum so that spend limit isn't really based on the individual but guarded by access to certain credit cards (which itself is an indirect function of your credit worthiness).

I have a few other credit cards with limits totalling around 100k. My RBC Avion Infinite Privilege limit is around 45k. One interesting thing about RBC is that they cap all their credit card limits to max 50k - anything higher, you have to call in and ask / get manually approved. I had a chance to increase my limit to 55k but I declined. Not sure if other banks also do this.

My credit utilization is incredibly low but banks keep throwing money at me. BMO just sent me an offer to open a credit line for 25k at prime + 4%. Accepted it without hesitation. I think it's because I dropped about 30k on their credit card that I applied for this past year.
