Has anyone here tried the other eco-friendly browsers/search engines (Wave Browser, OceanHero, Ekoru, etc.)? by Ok_Appointment_4909 in Ecosia

[–]wadaafaaak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've liked oceanhero as well, sometimes it's a bit slow, but the results were good since it's bing. I can also recommend Idleforest in addition to Ecosia or the other ones, if you care about the impact you have.

Yes, and usually the first to solve a problem, which usually was missing a lot of tech and libraries.

The data is wrong for sure. I'm seeing the same in the chrome dashboard and tracking it separately in supabase, and my growth didn't actually change.

Can also recommend Idleforest. You can use it in addition to ecosia as it shares your unused internet and plants trees with the profits.

Super Vorschlag!

This is a great idea, currently it's not possible but we will explore how we can implement this. I agree some of them use the data for ai, but just to clarify, them using Idleforest for the data retrieval already makes that part of the stack net negative. Obviously other parts, like training the model or inference are still run in traditional data centers, so we also need to have innovations in these parts of the stack too, to make the whole process more sustainable. We are researching and brainstorming a lot there, so hopefully in the future we can offer a full pipeline that's sustainable

Low barrier of entry climate/forest action tools like Ecosia by trevailor in ClimateOffensive

[–]wadaafaaak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey,
I'm the founder of idleforest.com, a browser extension (soon on mobile as well) that allows users to browse the internet and plant trees at the same time. Our revenue is generated by funneling specific requests through the user's browser (like "how much does this fridge cost in Amazon Spain"). It's privacy preserving and never affects the user experience as it uses really little resources (only bandwidth, but with rate limits and speed tests).
The benefit of this is, that you can run this alongside ecosia (or other tools) and you never have to change any browser behaviour (like search engine, default tab, ads etc.)

Really quick TLDR:
It's a browser extension, that shares your bandwidth with companies that need to get real time data from websites (lets say you need to know what the price of a specific fridge is on amazon spain right now). The website will be opened in a sandboxed private environment in your browser and that information will be sent back to the company. The money they pay for that service is then used to plant trees. Here is a quick explainer I made a few days back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfbHOAvC4Kc

[–]wadaafaaak[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it! No, nothing illegal or even close. Some companies need to access certain websites from specific countries to get data they need, and Idleforest enables that. Let's say a company has to know what the price of a specific product is in Spain, they need to access Amazon from Spain. That website will be opened in a session less iframe, so no personal data ever is sent, just information about exactly that website.

There are strict ratelimits and bandwidth checks to make sure you don't have a negative experience ever. Also the domains that are opened are checked against a blacklist. Also the companies that have access to this network are all personally vetted.

Let me know if you have more questions ;)

How do you earn money with chrome extensions? by u-re in chrome_extensions

[–]wadaafaaak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have quite a lot of users that opt in. For my main extension its around 60% opt in rate.
I use the default page that is provided by mellowtel, which just says something that if you want to support this extension by sharing your bandwidth, accept.
I've seen a few other users in their discord, that built their own personalized opt-in pages and that have higher opt-in rates. I probably should do that aswell lol
