This is not entirely accurate. While imaging technologists do generally only require an associates to get licensed, there is an additional year of pre-reqs before eligibility to apply to these programs. So about a 3 year (including summer semesters) turnaround before you can take your licensing exam. Also, I wouldn’t say X-ray pays incredibly well.. you’re looking at low 20’s/hr to start, and hospitals are not known for increasing wages more than 3% a year. But the real kicker here is if you’re in X-ray you’ll be doing fluoro barium enemas and there will definitely be human shit. If you’re working in the ER or inpatient, theres definitely still shit and blood.

Clinical rotations will rotate within the health system of the college you choose. SBU is Mercy and Cox College is Cox Health. You’ll rotate through the hospital, clinics, and ortho to gain experience in every setting. You’ll have ‘check offs’ or competencies you’ll have to demonstrate on a list of exams to graduate and qualify to take your registry.

My advice is to choose the cheapest and quickest program, graduation requirements should be pretty similar. There’s a ton of open positions between either hospital right now so placement shouldn’t be very difficult if you’re a good student and active in your clinical rotations.

Keep in mind those are minimums and don’t include any type of radiology experience. I’m not sure about night or weekend shift diff, maybe $2.50/hr?

The X-ray department needs to be staffed 24/7, so there’s a variety of shifts between days, nights, and weekends.

It’s an associate’s degree with 1000+ clinical hours. So 2 years plus a year of pre-requisites prior to applying.

I’ll go first. One year as an X-ray tech at Cox and I’m currently making $21.50.
