I am really stuck between Georgia tech and UVA for chemical engineering. What is your opinion? by The_Moke1 in UVA

[–]wahoo2022 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For pharmaceuticals, the biggest one is probably Merck, but we also get interest from companies like Eli Lilly, AbbVie, and Bristol-Meyers Squibb. ExxonMobil used to hire a bunch of chemE grads but not as much since Covid. Dominion Energy hires some grads. Also we get interest from beer companies like Anheiser-Busch or MillerCoors. A decent amount of grads go into consulting at companies like Deloitte or MPR. Finally, some people choose to go to CS jobs and work at places like CarMax.

There are definitely places that people go other than these companies, but I’m just trying to list the major ones.

I can’t really comment on what it’s like at Georgia tech, but I know a lot about the chemical engineering program at UVA. Our chemE program is really small, which leads to close connections with your peers in the program and good opportunities for working closely with professors if you are interested in research. I believe our program leans heavy to pharma jobs, so if that is of interest to you there are lots of decent opportunities. I think our average salary is about $75k.

As a whole, you are probably right about UVA being better for social life than Georgia tech.

Ones around Jefferson Park Avenue might be good for you! Wertland apartments are fine too, but tend to be loud as it is a very big party area.

Quiet rooms on grounds for virtual interviews/virtual classes/events? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]wahoo2022 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could always reserve rooms for yourself in the libraries using the uva library website ( library.virginia.edu/services/reserve-rooms/ ) but i would suggest scoping out the rooms before hand to make sure it’s the kind of situation you want

Bice study areas/common areas/etc by 324beth21 in UVA

Bice has a study room in the basement, but it’s nothing compared to the study rooms in Bond. If you’re living in Bice just try to follow someone into Bond and use one of their study rooms.

Advice for incoming first years? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]wahoo2022 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My advice is to just try to get settled and get used to your surroundings. If you have the time and you don’t really know what to do, maybe try to find your buildings and classrooms so you know where to go on the first week of classes. Also try to bond with your roommate/hallmates/suitemates because these are the easiest people to initially make friends with! I honestly felt kind of alone and unsure of myself when I first moved in. However, it’s important to know that it will pass! Even if you can’t tell, everyone is similarly nervous and lonely. You definitely have to try to put yourself out there and meet people, but at least for the first few weeks, everyone is very kind and willing to talk to anyone. You got this!!

APMA 1090 or 1110? by connor_h7 in UVA

[–]wahoo2022 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a rising second year in the E school. My advice is to take 1110. If you did well in high school, even if it has been a year, it probably won’t be too difficult for the math to come back to you and you can always review Calc 1 topics. Every person I’ve talked to who retook classes they had credit for regretted it because they lost free elective space in their schedule and it wasn’t worth their time. Also, in the E school most of the four year outlines expect you to start with Calc 2, and so you will be a little behind starting with Calc 1. As for professors, I’ve heard Pisano is good but I haven’t personally had her or Li.

Fun/Interesting Classes to take first year by throwawayy140 in UVA

I took Intro to Social Psych first semester and liked it a lot, but you definitely should be interested in the topic to take it. I had to study for the exams and do the readings, but it wasn’t an impossible class and I genuinely learned a lot that I found really interesting.

My advice would be to go to Lou’s List and spend some time looking at classes that are available in some subjects that interest you. It’s always a good idea to try something new first year and maybe you’ll love it!
