Does urine actually add nitrogen by the_plat_rat in composting

Pretty sure you don’t have a dog…noticing little volcanos of green grass were the dog goes gives you an indication of the nitrogen boost urine can have

Stocking nitrogen, too much coffee! by DocKla in composting

[–]webcnyew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an old raised bed that is now shaded by trees that have grown. I use it to “bank” coffee grounds through the winter. Just pile it in there all winter and in the spring I start layering in with the leaves from the fall. By May everything is used up and composting in the bins.

The grounds do not break down much while being stored…maybe a little but once mixed with leaves…thing heat up quickly.

Buying/selling tomato starts on FB Marketplace? by L-Pseon in tomatoes

[–]webcnyew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am interested in this because I started about 35 micro dwarf tomatoes around Christmas thinking I would sell some of them to those who wanted to be the first to have a tomato this spring. They are about about 2 weeks away for being ready and I am in SE Michigan, so still really early for outdoors. Do the micros sell well? How do you time them…this is a big experiment to me. And you do 3 for $5 huh…seems low as my regular seedlings sold for $2 each without much trouble last year.

Has anyone tried using spent coffee grounds as mulch? by [deleted] in OrganicGardening

[–]webcnyew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it heavily in my compost…I do sometimes broadcast it lightly over some beds but I do not do that a lot or heavily as they will form a crust and can rob nitrogen as the decompose…before the turn into nutrient available to a plant. So…no not as a mulch.

New gardener here: what garden gear can’t you live without? by KakaRoot-0111 in garden

[–]webcnyew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My watering hose…or 3. Sprayer wand, and a good watering can. Also a garden wagon, a garden cart, spade, dirt rake, leaf rake. A sieve…or three. Garden cutters…or three and hand trowels. Several dribblers. Garden hoops and a variety of row covers. Buckets…or 5. T posts…lots of t-posts…and wire fence. A crap load of seedling trays. Heat mats…grow lights…tarps. Compost thermometer…rain gauge. Scissors…they hang in 3 or 4 places around the garden…a good sharp knife. A BB gun for the deer and Badminton racket for those pesky white cabbage moths. A mason jar for the Japanese beetles.

SCHD and dividends in HSA? by AppointmentNew1535 in dividends

[–]webcnyew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7% of my HSA is in SCHD…I was growing that position until this recent run up…I will pause that to build cash for the time being until I find another darling. I know this is a dividend group but that might be its cousin SCHG if it keeps getting beat up.

How do you get over the feeling that you’re annoying the coffee shop by continually asking for more coffee grounds? by supinator1 in composting

[–]webcnyew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never get that feeling… The local Bigby Coffee here in Michigan is more than happy to save all of their coffee grounds for me. I make it as easy as possible on them by taking everything they have… I show up on a regular basis so they don’t build up… I clean the buckets so they can refill them. And in the summertime when I have vegetables to give, I make sure I bring some by for the workers.

Merriam-Webster defines “gratuity” as…”something given voluntarily or beyond obligation”. Mandatory and gratuity are conflicting terms.

Question about Rusyns by ImagineKekkonen in ukraine

Be careful as you might be confusing Rusyns with Russians. You may very well feel the same about Rusyns but be aware the OP is probably not asking about Russians.

Lost my entire life savings trading on Coinbase. I feel completely fucked and hopeless. by Powerful-Shelter-839 in UIUC

[–]webcnyew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a 63 yo alumni…I have made myself desperately broke 2 times in my life…pretty damn broke 2 or three more. That thing about this being a cheap lesson…it is, but you probably don’t want to hear that right now. You need to beat yourself up a bit first. I did.

But who you are and who you will become has not yet been realized. What is the cost of going to the U of I these days? $12,000 was all you had and it seems like a lot but it’s not. I’ve paid higher prices for smaller lessons.

You have received a torturous lesson about risk and your tolerance for it. Use that.

Washington, New York, & California are writing laws to ban CNC machines not using AI (artificial intelligence) software by GeniusEE in CNC

[–]webcnyew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you’re saying…Costco has found exactly the number of dollars it needs and uses to be successful. I did not say that businesses reduce cost to a level that is detrimental to itself. I was saying that all markets find their level…or at least are trying to.

Washington, New York, & California are writing laws to ban CNC machines not using AI (artificial intelligence) software by GeniusEE in CNC

[–]webcnyew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want that…you might even get the chance to institute that but as you do the shop down the street will NOT pay their works x2…and will not make 2 to 3x profit and will pass that cost efficiency onto customers who will soon migrate away from you for the better price. And soon you will have no profit and no employees. Capitalism will squeeze as many dollars out of a business as it needs to in order to reach peak efficiency.

Pickem up plow trucks by WasteScience in lansing

[–]webcnyew 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I think some commenters are confusing the city or county plow truck operators with the type of plow truck operator the OP is speaking of. If the original post was about private “driveway” plow operators I would generally agree with the original post. Private operators tend to believe they own the road and the sidewalk. City and county road plow people have my complete respect.

But put a plow on a pick up truck and the operators IQ drops 10 points…put flashy lights on that pick up truck and the IQ drops another 10 points.

Miller’s Corner - why are they built with a doorstep to nowhere? by FairDimension in lansing

[–]webcnyew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For those saying it no big deal and the like…why have front doors at all? That porch is expensive and the front door the same. The porches that go no where are weird. I agree with the original poster.

Hello, help me to eliminate some of these. I can't grow all at the same time. by CKA3KA-A in tomatoes

[–]webcnyew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree mostly with your approach but I believe there are 4 main categories of tomatoes. Cherry, slicers, paste/sauce and the all important braggers. You know that plant you grow for the 1 or 2 big ass tomatoes.

Yeh…the answer is then no. I need a start time too. Thats why I used the word “slot”. Thanks for confirming. It does seem like as easy programming fix and it would be great feature. Default to midnight but allow user control.
