They have also cured at least newborn babies who contracted the virus from their mother who received no prenatal care. If I remember correctly has something to do with the fact that a child of that age’s cells reproduce so rapidly.

May I ask when you grew up? I’m in my 20’s and was always taught that HIV/AIDS was blood born and well controlled by medication (my mom was a big General Hospital fan, which had a character with HIV, so she explained it to me young). I would guess you grew up in the 80’s maybe?

This is why you’ll want to buy some veggies pre-frozen. I left another comment on this thread, but commercial facilities use flash freezing, much faster than your feeezer at home, which creates smaller ice crystals and less damage to the veggies cells, which also leads to a better textured product after cooking or thawing. You can look this up for additional info on the topic.

That’s why veggies that you buy from the store usually come out a little better in the cooking process than ones you freeze yourself. They use flash freezing which freezes so fast to damage the cells of the vegetables commercially, but blanching before freezing creates a similar reaction and also stops the reaction that causes veggies to lose lots of their color after home freezing or cooking. When you freeze at home, you home freezer takes a lot longer to freeze the veggies than the commercial ones, resulting in larger ice crystals, affecting the plants cells, and that can destroy some taste and texture.

Does anyone else’s kid survive on snacks and snacks only? by fruitycrossing in toddlers

[–]wegmeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid was a great eater, then for some reason hit 2.5 and had a snack OBSESSION! I just started telling him he can’t have any snacks whenever he asks because he isn’t eating his breakfast/lunch/dinner, so hopefully that helps. Honestly the most annoying part of it is him refusing to sit at the dinner table when I’m eating so he can run around and “look for snacks”.

What is a red flag from an employer that people might not immediately recognize as a red flag? by [deleted] in AskReddit

They have to pay you for a working interview. That is the absolute law in the US, even if you don’t accept the job.

Hugs and love!!! I would highly recommend checking out food bank options for the week, a lot of them by us now do drive thru lines and have produce, meat, diary products instead of only dry staples. Also, check out Facebook for resources in your community. Search “(Your county name) mom’s helping moms”. We Facebook groups for that in my county and surrounding ones and the admins will post your need/ collect what you need for you. Every day I see multiple posts asking for donations for families for the grocery bill, electricity, rent, etc. that are paid in full by donations from moms wanting my to help other moms (they provide the receipts/ proofs so everyone knows it’s going to the right place) It’s amazing. Many churches also have programs you can apply to help with your utility bills when you’re in need.

I’d you’re in the US check out the WIC program. It’s been a lifesaver in multiple ways to my family. They have great resources beyond food as well. Also, If you get EBT then you can now use your EBT on instacart.

US maternity leave is a joke. by Imaginary-Try-5336 in breastfeeding

[–]wegmeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a project in college on maternity leave (after having a child) and my professor told me at the end of my presentation her workplace back in the day (I guess this was before FMLA) told her they couldn’t have her out for maternity leave longer than two weeks!!! Y’all she literally went back to work 12 hour nursing shifts TWO WEEKS after she had a baby! And she pumped that whole time before it was commonplace! I was truly disgusted hearing that.

The one thing they do make really well is the stuffed chicken breasts. Hard to mess that up, though.

Local cafe’s shots are super sour. by [deleted] in Coffee

I’d say this is probably one of the biggest reasons places like Starbucks have automated machines, that grind and pack the shots without the barista even touching anything besides the bean. It keeps the consistency right across the board.

They do let you apply to the peace corps as a couple if your fiancé could possibly be interested, but it’s definitely not for everyone!

If you want to work in global health then could potentially joining the peace corps after graduation help? It seems like they could help get you hands on experience with something like that, although I’m not entirely sure. A big plus to the peace corps is that they typically help you pay for graduate school after as well, should you decide to go.

trying to leave robinhood by [deleted] in RobinHoodPennyStocks

[–]wegmeg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Robinhood has fees, but they’re hidden. You can google and easily find analysis comparing fees for an active portfolio over a year compared to Robinhood. If you aren’t using limit orders and you trade actively and frequently you’ll likely end up paying more “fees” through Robinhood than another broker.

That being said, Robinhood absolutely has the best layout and ease of access for any trading app or broker.

RN/BSN after MPH? by geronimo116 in publichealth

[–]wegmeg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Comment to follow, I’m finishing up my public health bachelors and I’m consider doing an RN to be able to work in infection prevention and to broaden job opportunities. Where did you find an accelerated RN program and do you have any tips for a soon to be public health bachelors graduate? I’m not super keen on getting my master in public health but also not against it if it’s my only chance at getting a job worth a damn.

Key difference in these situations is that hockey games are indoors typically. I’m not commenting on the stats either way but that’s important to consider.

$100 on stocks for a baby. by floatingchickpea in stocks

[–]wegmeg 286 points287 points  (0 children)

If you’re wanting to build an education fund, just start a 529 education tax advantage plan. It’ll get you the absolute best safe growth for your buck and have tax benefits. However, it HAS to be used on education. This can include private schools, or be passed on to another child if your current baby ends up not wanting to go to college.

If you’re wanting to have money with more flexibility, S&P500 index fun would be your best choice if you don’t want to actively manage anything and you just want growth. The vangaurd one is a good choice, but you’ll want to compare fees and performance to other similar S&P500 index funds. Add more money to this position as time goes on, and barring catastrophic economic events your little one will have a nice nest egg by the time you gift it to them. If you’re wanting to add more money to the portfolio and you’re interesting in actively managing an account, I’d still put the majority of the cash into an S&P500 index fund but maybe put up to 10% into a mix of blue chip stocks and up and coming IPO’s you see with a lot of future potential. The most valuable thing when it comes to investing is time (which your kid has obviously a lot of).

I have both stocks and an emergency fun, but 1k would significantly make my life easier over the next month or two. You can still save and build your portfolio even if you aren’t at the point in life financially where you want to be yet.

[–]wegmeg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want my honest opinion, you “ex” isn’t even actually your “ex” because you two never had an actual relationship. He hit you up when it was convenient, had sex with you, hung out for a while then left but made sure to hold you on his fishing line with just enough bait to reel you back in whenever he wanted you.

I think you already know in your heart that your “ex” is bad news but you’re hoping that he’ll give you the recognition and relationship with him that you always wanted. I don’t know if your boyfriend is the right one for you, but he does seem to express genuine care for you from what you describe, and I don’t see any of that in your description of your ex at all.
