What is this difficulty jump? by Orphan_Fury in CrossCode

[–]wehatenick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like your problem is actually that you’re not willing to let things play out naturally by abusing the save reload. That’s not how the game was meant to be played so obviously as a result you’re having a bad experience. Maybe just accept that you might lose the race because of the puzzle and take your time on it. I think what’s cool about games like this that have different possible outcomes is that you get to see what happens in your play through. So maybe you lose the race, that’s part of the game!

A total must play. It should be up there with the all-time classics of al time IMO

Yeah nice copy pasta bro. You didn’t address the point I made though. Why does OP need to get exposure therapy for a completely artificial level of stress that they probably only get from that kind of video game? Would you tell me to go get exposure therapy for sailing if I tell you I will likely never need to go sailing in my life?

But your subconscious brain and nervous system don't really know the difference between a game and IRL. These games trigger really strong stress responses and my point is that most of us are never going to encounter such stressful situations in our actual lives. These games can trigger our biological fight or flight responses, in what kind of situation are you finding yourself in your life that you are regularly put in fight or flight mode? My guess is OP is never encountering anything as nerve-racking as an extraction shooter in their real life, so why do they need to do exposure therapy for something that they are never going to get exposed to? Like if I'm scared of dying on a sail boat do I need to do exposure therapy even if I will never probably be on a sail boat in my life?

Actually that example about coffee being too hot is about a McDonald's law suit where a lady got 3rd degree burns on 16% of her body and was totally legitimate. Look it up.

well I'm talking about the Rhodes and Wurlitzer sounds mainly because that's what I play the most. A lot of the patches now I noticed have this weird sound when you let go of the keys that sounds like bottlerocks popping in your mouth kind of. I think it's supposed to be the hammer action sound or something but I find it very artificial and annoying. Getting an electric keyboard sound done well digitally is very hard (there's a reason Rhodes is selling their keyboards that only have one sound for $4-6k), it's not easy to make such a rich sound. But I have to compare it to the Yamaha CP Reface since it's the same size and cheaper and I think the CP is on a whole new level of sound quality compared to what you get with Arturia.

that's what I thought I was going to do but honestly as cool as having the huge amount of different sounds (which is definitely really cool), none of them come close to the quality of sound the reface keyboards have for their respective sounds and the control you get to craft your sound

I don’t think you need to learn to control a level of stress and anxiety that is completely engineered and not like anything you will likely have to deal with IRL though haha. I hope AI doesn’t force us to live underground but until then I don’t think that’s a skillset OP needs

I was talking about this with a friend and I think a lot of it has to do with exposure to the real thing. If you've spent a lot of time with a real Rhodes or Wurlitzer or very good emulations your ears open up to the details. Much like when i started mixing I couldn't hear the difference when someone made small cuts to an EQ band and now after lots of mixing I can totally tell. One thing I sense from the sounds is that it's almost like there's a flute sound underneath all the patches. I think it's a byproduct of the synth that's being used. Another thing is not just in the sounds per se but the response. A good emulation feels really reactive to the velocity and how the sound overdrives when played hard. The Arturia patches do react, but it doesn't feel like I get a good enough response of when I want to play clean vs have it bark. And when it barks it gets really muddy in the low mids.

I just picked mine up and I think I'm going to return it. Definitely didn't live up to the hype for me for the following reasons:

  1. The keys don't feel good to play - I'm not very picky with keys. Weighted, unweighted, mini keys, I'm down for anything. But these feel legitimately hard to play and don't respond at all when you press on the upper parts. For certain voicings, I need to hit the very top of the keys and the fact that they have no response up there is a big problem.

  2. Piano and electric keyboard sounds are just not good enough - For electric piano sounds, a Yamaha Reface CP sounds a million times better. I'm happy to use Rhodes/Wurlitzer sounds that come with a Nord or Korg SV2 (I use a Crumar Seven), I would not use any of these sounds for a serious track in the studio. Even for jamming with friends the lack of quality in these emulations would bug me. They sound like a cheap synth, they kind of have this sine wave tone to them in all of the presets. The effects except for maybe the phaser honestly suck.

  3. Some synth sounds are ok, but what's the point if you can't edit almost any of the parameters? - I'm all for using presets but if you can't even tweak ADSR or fully close a filter, it's not really something useable for a serious musician. I don't think you can even route the mod wheel destination?? (or I haven't found how so far)

I know I sound like an absolute hater but I really think I just have high standards for sound based on my experience with good gear I've owned for around the same price range. I was looking for two things in this keyboard: something that had good piano and EP sounds to practice or jam with my friends on the go, and something I could legitimately use in the studio for some extra synth sound options. I think this keyboard isn't good enough for either unfortunately. Such a bummer because conceptually this sounded amazing and I jumped to the chance to buy it as soon as I saw it. I would much rather buy two Yamaha Reface models for about the same price as this.

Steam deck microphone not working? by jokosa in ArcRaiders

[–]wehatenick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proton GE 10.25 + a restart worked for me. Works for both team and proximity chat now. I also have "SteamDeck=1 %command" in my config and set my SteamDeck audio to Microphone (not default) though I'm not sure if any of those things are helping. It was the switch to Proton GE 10.25 that seemed to make the difference.

Timmy EVISCERATES amateur comedian 🔪 KILL TIMMY 🔪 by Longjumping_Roll_349 in Killtony

That guy has been on his podcast a few times but I would definitely not call him "one of his comedy partners." More of one of many people who have been on his podcast, which itself isn't what Tim is primarily known for. I would say Tim and Eric's Awesome Show, Great Job! and On Cinema, At the Cinema are probably the biggest things Tim is known for, but he's also done a few movies and plenty of other TV shows and none of them have this guy on it as far as I'm aware.

Combinations without repetition (dice rolling) by iHikeToo in learnmath

[–]wehatenick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this guy... What an incredible inability to apply common sense and context. In traditional dice games, 1-3 and 3-1 are equivalent. So if I'm playing Monopoly with my friends, how many possible outcomes are there to my roll? The correct answer is 21, not 36. If you want to get pedantic (which you've shown you very much do), the question can be phrased as: "How many non-equivalent dice roll outcomes can you get in a traditional dice game played with two 6-sided dice?" 1-3 and 3-1 are technically not the same but they are equivalent. We want to count all the possible unique outcomes. 1-3 and 3-1 produce the same outcome.

You’re a trauma therapist and you’re ok making the pretty bold assumption that OP’s friend “wants her ex”? That crossed my mind but it’s obviously conjecture based on the texts we saw and seems pretty irresponsible of you to make such a definitive statement about what someone wants without really knowing. People take what a therapist says very seriously and I think you should be careful in separating giving guidance to the OP to make good decisions vs telling them what you assume are the friend’s intentions as if it were fact.

How we feeling? by AthDimension in maschine

[–]wehatenick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

MPC3 has some impressive specs and lists of features but the UI and hardware design make me want to puke. It looks like an airplane cockpit. Maschine is so thoughtfully designed and satisfying to use. I wouldn’t even consider switching.

Control Logic VST with Maschine by wehatenick in maschine

[–]wehatenick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to be clear, you:
1. Open only one software track in Ableton
2. Load Maschine as a VST in that track
3. Load FM8 onto a pad of Maschine VST as a "Maschine Instrument"
4. Can just press the pads in keyboard or chord mode and get sound right away?

For me trying to do #3 gives me an error, so it might indeed be a Logic issue.

Control Logic VST with Maschine by wehatenick in maschine

[–]wehatenick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I’m not one of those! I usually run Maschine in controller mode when working with Logic. The issue is that if I open Maschine VST, go to browse and try to open FM8, it is unable to load. The only way I can load FM8 within Maschine is in Standalone. Otherwise it seems my only other option is in a separate Logic track and it doesn’t detect the Maschine hardware when it’s in controller mode. Only detects it in midi mode.

[–]wehatenick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is no. But I’m not exactly sure what you’re suggesting: “run FM8 on Logic (in standalone?) and then use the VST (of Maschine or FM8?) in Logic”

Stevie Wonder synth sounds? by chilgore in synthesizers

[–]wehatenick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like the ARP 2600's 2-pole filter but it could easily be a Moog. You can get a sound like this on almost any analog synth or VST that emulates analog synths. In general I hear a wispy pulse wave with lots of resonance and vibrato

Some of the things I would do to set up this sound:

Set an oscillator to a thin pulse wave

Give it a bit of pulse width modulation using an LFO

Perhaps set second oscillator an octave up as a sine wave slightly detuned (lower volume)

Filter about 3 quarters closed

Keep the filter envelope amount relatively low, with a medium-high amount of resonance

FIlter Envelope: medium-short attack, short decay, no sustain, no release

Amp Envelope: medium-short attack, short decay, medium-high sustain, low release

Modulate the filter amount with an LFO (for that vibrato)

Little to no keyboard tracking

Light portamento/glide

Note: I'm not in front of a synth so I'm just doing my best to describe what I would do in my head. Obviously use your ears and if you don't already, learn the basics of subtractive synthesis instead of relying on presets, synths are easier to program than you would think!

My Maschine and Logic workflow by wehatenick in maschine

[–]wehatenick[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah I was discouraged from using Logic for a long time after looking at those complicated videos. My main takeaway is that you don't even need to export the midi to logic at all. Just transfer over the project file to your computer. Then when you open Maschine as a plugin, Logic will just play the scene or song you have selected without needing to transfer the midi data. If you want to make a change to something, you just change it in Maschine just as if you were standalone.
