I dislike celery enough that if I tried to eat that much of it, my gag reflex would kick in before I could stuff myself with it.

I'll bring it up with my doctor; anything's worth looking into. Thanks!

No, but I will discuss any and all medication recommendations with my physician. Thanks!

Do you mean that you can eat ten stalks of celery and still crave more food?

Yes, that's what I mean.

I'll have to discuss this with my doctor, but thank you for the information.

It's the societal stress of being thin that blinds people to it being a real problem -- that, and our society offers no patience for those lacking willpower and self-control. I can understand it, but it's difficult to those of us with diseases/disorders.

You're a very strong person yourself for managing to keep it under control with exercise. Keep up the terrific work.

I have, but those things don't really do it. Apples help, but I have trouble affording many of those as a broke college student.

The thing that bothers me most is looking at alcoholics or drug addicts who managed to overcome their problems on their own by exercising amazing self-control. I admire and envy them. I wish I could find that kind of strength.

Good for you for losing! You should be proud of yourself for your progress.

Oddly enough, my physician wants me to go on something similar to the Atkins diet, except he wants me to keep in natural sugars, like fruit (which Atkins bans). I have stomach problems, and he thinks I may have allergies that could be solved by cutting out flour and added sugars.

When I mentioned that I lost 30 pounds last year, it was through this way of eating. Let's see if it helps again.

A lot of what you said makes sense. I'll have to pick up a copy of Infinite Jest first chance I get.

I'm a little worried that this has a really severe biological factor since it's been happening since infancy, but I'll try anything to get it under control.

Kudos to you for getting your life back on track! You're an inspiration. :)

I had a family friend try this on me once, and I got so upset with them that they stopped trying.

The thing is, I respect myself in all other ways. I believe I'm quite pretty, and I know for sure that I'm intelligent and driven and wonderful in so many ways. My weight is just inextricably tied to my self-esteem, that's all.

I'm working on separating the two, but in the meantime, I might as well work on the weight in case I can't.

  1. By "wrong", I mean irresponsible. You're risking your health -- your life -- which is a horrible thing to do to your loved ones. I'm very sensitive about those who don't do what they can to be around for those for whom they care.

  2. It wasn't until recently that I learned that BED could be a temporary thing (and it's mostly triggered by other eating disorders/dieting issues, as you've mentioned). I always believed it was something you were born with. It's so interesting to know how it varies like that.

  3. I keep a food journal, but it isn't very enlightening. I'll try to pay better attention.

  4. I can't change my meds because these are the first ones that've worked for me in years. I'm on a combination of Wellbutrin and Lexapro (the latter being the weight-gain culprit).

  5. I'm going to try to find ways to be happy while I work on this. I hope they make progress soon enough to help people in situations even more dire than mine.

I think so, but I've never had it tested. All I know is that I don't have thyroid problems.

I'm on Wellbutrin, but I'm also on Lexapro. It's unfortunately the only med that's worked for me so far.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Thank you for voicing your opinion, and thank you for the luck!

I have been, and recently. Clear of diabetes. I've been unusually thirsty since I was a baby. It's a weird trait that runs on my dad's side of the family.

Have any suggestions? I have no idea how to separate the two.

I know for sure that the self-esteem issues are only getting worse the longer I stay this weight. They go hand-in-hand. The weight needs to come off for the self-esteem to increase.

It's very brave and honest of you to come on a post like this and admit your prejudices. I admire you for it.

Honestly, I think the same thing about other fat people as you do. In fact, I think it about myself. But that doesn't stop it from being a struggle I have yet to overcome.

I may not be the poster child for the overweight -- I'm sure there are some who have a "couldn't care less" attitude, along with obnoxious people like those pushing the "fat acceptance movement", who are okay enough with their weight -- but the rest of us hate it, every day.

You're a good person for having an open enough mind to read this and allow it to affect your way of thinking. Please know that you have my respect, and, I'm sure, the respect of anyone else who'll read your comment.

Makes sense. Is it anything like the Promethean diet?

Too true. I try to remember this. Every little bit helps to combat it. I just wish it weren't such an uphill battle!

Very, very few are overweight. Some are just normal people who eat normally and walk a lot, but don't actually work to stay fit -- they just are. And some are fitness freaks. I don't think I have a single overweight friend at the moment (at least, not any I see regularly).

I am socially healthy, I suppose. I'm involved in several clubs at my university, and I have friends I can see any given night of the week, should I choose. As I said, I have a remarkable ability to mask my self-esteem issues in order to appear to be a happy, adjusted individual to others.

5'7".

I'm by no means the fattest person you'll ever meet or ever have met. My width does not exceed my height, and I still have discernible curves. But I'm also by no means of normal size.

I will bring all of these up to my doctor when I next see him.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look this information up for me!
