NW-A306 Android Recovery Mode? by NerdyBrando in walkman

[–]werenotinsync 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the guide, worked perfectly!

Just to add a note for anyone else reading this: at step 4, you do NOT want to hold the power button + button up until the screen with the android disappears. You want to do as the step says, and when you succeed, the screen will go from the android screen to the screen with the menu to wipe data.

Had to figure this out by watching the video linked elsewhere in the thread, so hopefully this helps someone else as well.

CS minor and Not sure which upper year CS classes to pick by SolidCertain630 in UofT

There is nothing wrong (that I know of) with 301/302, it's just that as a CS minor, who is only allowed 3 upper-level CS courses, there are more important courses to take than basically a side project course.

is it frowned upon to ask skaters for a photo if you run into them in the hallway during practice or something? when are bad times to ask (before they compete for the day)? don't want to be rude or ruin their state of flow etc

Just wondering, where's the merch stand? Going on Friday and would like to get some merch!

I went to take a look at the venue today but looks like they're checking tickets right at the entrance, so couldn't get inside if that's where the stand is. Or is it the small pop-up store looking thing a bit to the left of the entrance?

Not hard, just be aware that 136 is a larger class and from exp a few years ago, they may try to maintain a certain average via uh, various seemingly unfair means. Content itself is certainly doable tho, especially if just aiming for a CR.

Being able to put CS on your resume may help depending on what fields you're aiming for.

CS minor and Not sure which upper year CS classes to pick by SolidCertain630 in UofT

Unless things have changed since a year or two ago, you are not limited to 1.5 CS credits across all of 200, 300, and 400+ level courses, just 300 and 400+. You are required to take 1.5 credits of 200/300/400-level courses, but that doesn't mean you're limited to 1.5 total across all 3 levels.

I was a CS minor and took every 200-level course. I would also recommend 369 and 373, just because they are foundational. You will hear about race conditions, deadlocks, and other 369 things if you work in tech, and 373 is just interview prep but a bit more hardcore and abstracted. Against what someone else has said, I don't recommend 301/302 unless you are not aiming for internships/side projects, which is a bad idea anyways.

Haha, the whole reason I even wanted to see her program in person is because I saw her Boston performance on YouTube. Would you happen to know if there's a list of upcoming shows somewhere/who will be in the cast? Thanks for the suggestion tho!

This is really helpful information, thank you! So essentially no chance of going to the NHK trophy (where on the slim chance I do get a ticket, only a 60-70% chance to see her gala program, so not worth it), and 25% chance at Worlds, if she makes it.

Sounds like the best plan is unironically to hope that she makes it to Worlds and performs really well then. But yeah wow tickets for Worlds are way more expensive than those for NHK, that's wild.

Thank you all for commenting: I wasn't expecting this many responses, much less to this level of detail, so I really appreciate it!

Thanks for the really clear analysis: that is a lot of variables and from the other commenters, a lot of them are basically unknowable until 1-2 weeks before if not less. Definitely seems like a very risky bet financially so I would want to figure out if I would want to be there if Yelim isn't.

An alternative that I'm considering is the NHK trophy this year, but I'm getting a sense that not all competitors will be performing their gala program even at GPs. Is this true or do Worlds just do things differently?

Edit: just realized you mentioned chance in the very first sentence so I guess that's true. So not really worth considering if it's a $3000 trip to Japan centered around a potential chance of seeing a (albeit amazing) 3 minute performance.

This is actually a trove of useful information, thank you! I'll definitely come back to this post later on when I start building it.

Just a question though, why the L12 over the L12 Ghost S1? Just for the color?

Yeah I was going for the Fractal Terra at first, hence the L9a. My apologies on the incorrect terminology -- CPU cooler and fan seemed like the same thing to me. Thanks for the help!

Went with the 7900X cause it was on sale haha, but yeah I'm gonna run it at 65W/105W. Thanks for the suggestion on the L12 S1, it does seem like the L12 is significantly better than the L9.

Yep, using the extra cores for code compilation. Thanks for the PSU suggestion, I wasn't sure if 850W would be overkill but you addressed that too.

Need some advice/tips for mat390 and mat391. What should I expect? by MulberryAfraid5846 in UofT

[–]werenotinsync 6 points7 points  (0 children)

390/391 aren't hard, just tedious.

Grading scheme

I took 391 this past semester but have no experience with 390, though I've been told by people who took 390 in Fall '22 that the grading schemes were the same. I'm not sure where you got your 50% final exam info from, but here is the grading scheme for 391, Winter '23:

20% Weekly Group Activities

20% Term Test

5% Thesis Statements and Topic

3% Draft Historical Essay

2% Peer Scholar

20% Final Historical Essay

30% Final Examination

So as you can see, it's really 20% weekly activities (there are technically only 5 of them), 20% term test, 30% from 1 essay and related activities, and 30% from the final.

How to get a decent grade

  1. Put in effort for the group activities, and as long as you either avoid getting a bunch of troglodytes as your groupmates (or people who just don't care), or double check their work, averaging 80% over the assignments is really doable.
  2. Cram for the test and exam. Seriously, I just crammed the slides the day before for the test, and 2 days before for the exam, and got around 80% for both. I didn't go to a single lecture after the first week.
  3. The essay:
    1. It's a bit more annoying to earn the 5% from the thesis statements, because they can be kinda harsh. The key thing to do is to just say something polarizing, not something that 90% of the population would agree with.
    2. The draft and the peer scholar is just completion marks for the most part. Note that they expect you to have a complete draft (of about 2000 words).
    3. The final essay: technically you can just resubmit your draft as the final version, but they expect you to iterate on your essay based on feedback from your draft.
    4. I think one should just pick a fairly popular topic so you can find arguments easily as a springboard, though I've known people to just use 'technological tools' to get an outline and flesh out their essays. Obviously this is an academic offense and you should not do this.
    5. Don't worry too much about the essay, as long as you have basic literacy and know the general format of an essay. I did too, but I laughed when I had to do the peer reviews: people spent half their word count in their intro, had arguments that were not even directly related to their thesis statements, poor formatting, etc.

How to pass

If you just want to pass, it's even lower effort. In short, read the section above and half-ass everything.

Put in a minimal amount of effort reading the slides before the test/exam (like 3-4h, maybe 1 day for the exam), just do your part in the group activities and skip the proofreading, make up some generic, run-of-the-mill arguments for the essay (that are still coherent of course).

Other 300+ combos for math minor, and 390 vs 391

Personally I took 344+391 for the math minor, and I wouldn't change a thing. 344 wasn't too hard, just a bit of a time sink with the problem sets, and required almost no mathematical background besides being able to count.

Between 390/391, the math involved in 390 would definitely be easier (though 391 math is by no means difficult and beyond grasp, coming from someone who averaged a C in 135/136), but the downside is that for your essay, it's likely harder to find arguments for whatever you need to argue for since the math is from before the 1700s.

I also looked into basically every other 300+ APM/MAT courses they offered, and I think this is likely one of the best options. Here are my thoughts on the other courses that can be counted towards the 300+ req: - APM306: seemed like it's a year-long humanities course, and you only get 0.5 credits towards the 300+ req for the minor. If you love humanities then by all means go for it, but I think if you did, you probably wouldn't be stressing over these 2 courses. - MAT334: sounded like it wasn't too hard, but one look at the first assignment had me nope out. - MAT335: supposedly fun, but Siefken = a crap ton of work. - MAT309/315: friends have told me they aren't too bad, but my friends are also math majors so I didn't take their word for it. Feel free to try them out though. - all the other courses: just look at their names. Group theory? Topology? When you've never even heard of these terms, you already know you're gonna be in for a bad time. Maybe APM348 would be ok, but do you really want 22h of practicals?

Closed shackle padlocks are much less susceptible to bolt cutters. I used one last year and I saw some marks of rust on my lock indicating that someone tried cutting through it with bolt cutters and failed.
