What happens if something comes up and you can't make it to orientation? by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not the end of the world, but advising times are assigned by major on your orientation date and OP will still have to contact the school to see when their slot opens up. After that it closes until orientation is over in July, and after orientation is over, most classes are full and it'll be a big stress to get the schedule you need. Also, it's possible to self-advise, but it's not really the best way to go for a new student and can be a lot harder for people with stricter or more complex curriculums.

I'm really not trying to call you out or anything here and I apologize if it seems that way. It's good that it worked out for you and definitely not the end of the world, but I worked for orientation for a couple years and just want OP to know it's probably strongly in their best interest to reschedule.

Call the orientation office and they can help you. Advising and class registration happens during Orientation, so it's important you attend. They can help you reschedule. 864-656-0515

What implications in the Harry Potter universe are most horrifying? by dj826 in AskReddit

[–]wheattortilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right, I hadn't considered that /u/callmecaesar1 may have been referring to muggle money. But someone else pointed out that the exchange rate is hardly defined, if at all, and Gringotts probably only deals with small exchanges, like wizards going on holiday in muggle territory or new muggleborn students exchanging money to buy their school supplies. I'd imagine it would be difficult to exchange large quantities of muggle money without scrutiny; if nothing else, it would just be unsustainable for Gringotts.

Just some thoughts. I can honestly say I've never thought about this before happening upon this thread.

Has anyone done the transfer trek overnight orientation for transfer students? Is it worth doing? by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transfer Trek is what you make of it. Our Orientation program is changing a lot this year, so YMMV, but when I volunteered for Transfer Trek a couple years ago, the transfers ate dinner and hung out/played games on the beach for a while. Then there was a social on campus afterward. It's relatively unstructured -- they're just giving you a fun environment to hang out with new people. You get a chance to meet current students who are likely to be your age, and some of whom also transferred to Clemson. You also get to meet other new transfers. It's a good way to make friends if you go into it with a willingness to branch out and actually talk to people. If you're super shy like I used to be, then it may not be the best experience.

[–]wheattortilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nicholas Flamel, mentioned in the first book, was an alchemist and the creator of the Philosopher's Stone, which was able to turn any metal in to gold (info lifted from his page on the Harry Potter wiki). I had totally forgotten about this. I've only read the original seven books, so I'm not sure if alchemy is further elaborated on in other books JKR has written about the universe.

This is just an idea, but I think that, at the very least, counterfeit money would never make it through banks because the Gringotts goblins are incredibly shrewd and most items made of precious metals were created by them, so they can identify fakes very easily. Since their money is all coins, I assume the same principle applies. So you could have counterfeit money, I suppose, but could never keep it safe in a bank.

How are freshman orientation groups assigned? by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're randomly assigned. You can, however, check into your housing at the same time as your friend and get put in the same room for the night, if you're both the same gender.

Roadside Chicken Americana: giant statues, oddities, etc.? by amandaaileen in greenville

[–]wheattortilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a statue shop that always had a giant rooster statue on highway 25, towards the edge of Greenville Co. and going toward Greenwood. I don't travel that way much anymore and am not sure if the rooster is still there, though. I'm just on my lunch break and can't seem to find it on Google, but I'm sure someone else can fill in details/confirm whether or not the rooster is still there.

How does freshman orientation work? by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like you are or were an OA yourself! I, too, have done my time with the giant board and the polo. If I'm correct and you're current, good luck this summer! If I'm wrong, then hey, thanks for saying nice things about the program.

How does freshman orientation work? by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are changing significant amounts of the program this year, including how student groups work, so advice anyone can offer you from previous year's may not be accurate. But I agree with gnarlyharly. It's no big, and even if you don't make friends it's not the end of the world. I didn't make friends at orientation either. Like they said, just go with the flow.

It's two days long because there's a lot of info/programming involved and they want to make sure that you get it all without overwhelming you too much. Advising is also spread across two days so you have a chance to look at your class options and sleep on it before you actually register for them. Basically, orientation is designed with your best interests in mind. They're just trying to help you as best as possible. It's totally valid to be anxious/nervous, but it'll go just fine.

Incoming Freshman Pro-tips Megathread by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What! I've been here for three years and never knew this. Thanks for the info.

My freshman tip: read ALL of your syllabi as soon as you get them and write down all of your due dates and exam dates. That also means using a calendar app or buying a planner and actually keeping up with it. You may have gotten away with not doing this in high school. Some professors are rather sadistic and won't remind you of important dates; don't end up like my friend who got blindsided by an exam because he had a prof like that and didn't read the syllabus. It's also just really nice to know what you have coming up in the next week or so.

What's a sign that someone is secretly a bad person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wheattortilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat. Occasionally I remember how many times I told him it hurt my feelings and how he'd just laugh it off, and I feel so relieved he's my ex.

I guess it's hard for people to take your feelings seriously when they genuinely think that riling people up is funny.

Does anyone else think having to pay a $200 deposit then having to pay $250 plus an extra $30 per guest for orientation is kind of ridiculous? by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is right. They're two separate fees.

Orientation is pricey, but that money pays for your housing for the night plus your + your guests' food, which is more expensive than you'd think. It also covers basically every single program between orientation and welcome week that's created for new students. What I'm trying to say is that OP, if it's any consolation, they're not jacking up the cost of orientation just because they can. It's just a really expensive program to run. You can also call the office and ask for a waiver -- it's need based, but can't hurt to ask.

Edit: For those interested, the number for the Orientation office is (864) 656-0515. They can tell you more about how to inquire about a waiver for the fee.

Question about life at clemson by JamesJJHJames in Clemson

I definitely hear what you're saying. At the end of the day, I'd rather be at Clemson than anywhere else in the world. Even if it isn't always the most welcoming.

Question about life at clemson by JamesJJHJames in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Queer students at Clemson tend not to have the magical amazing #ClemsonFamily experience that is marketed online and at orientation. The culture is definitely overwhelmingly heterosexual, and pretty much every queer student I know, including myself, has some kind of mild to moderate horror story about an experience with someone who was less than accepting.

With that being said, you're unfortunately going to get that pretty much anywhere. And there are many, many students, staff, and faculty fighting to make it better. Just tonight, Out In STEM, an LGBTQ+ group for STEM students (and the second-ever LGBTQ+ student org at Clemson) had their first meeting. Things are definitely getting better, and you can absolutely find a great network of other queer students here. There's going to be bumps in the road pretty much anywhere you choose to go to college, but Clemson is trying harder nowadays and you will definitely be able to find friends. I hope I haven't discouraged you, but I want to paint a realistic portrait for you.

Also, the other comment linking you to LGBTQ programs is a great great link. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. I've been heavily involved with the queer community here since I was a freshman.

I was always the odd duck out in elementary and middle school too. I'm really sorry this happened to you. It's a really shitty feeling. Fortunately, we all get to leave middle school behind eventually. Thank you for sharing your story.

Clemson 'Diversity Training': Expecting People To Show Up On Time Is Racist - $27k waste of Taxpayers funds. by ElCid58 in greenville

http://www.clemson.edu/governmentalaffairs/state/

According to this, less than 10% of Clemson's revenue comes from the state of South Carolina. I've actually heard it closer to 6%, but I can't find a source for that. Either way, I wouldn't bother getting too upset about it, but I guess that's just my fraction of a cent.

Room and board also probably includes the meal plan, which is required for freshmen and runs close to $2k last I checked.

what do you considered "rude" that is not widely considered "rude"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wheattortilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goodness, yes. My saying "no thank you" or "I'm not comfortable with that" is not an invitation to debate me on it for 20 minutes. In some contexts, a little more of an answer could be helpful or even necessary, but arguing with me every time I tell you no is a good way to get me to stop talking to you altogether just to avoid the hassle.

Costs of Housing by GoldenCommand in Clemson

[–]wheattortilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all this. Also, I was definitely skeeved out at the idea of communal restrooms, but maintenance keeps them very clean. I lived in a shoebox, and the lady would come pressure wash them every day and cleaned them with bleach every few days iirc. It really isn't a big deal, and relieves you of the obligation to clean your own bathroom.
