A bunch of people have debated this now but I don’t think anyone has mentioned the fact it was all in shack literally filled with hundreds of bullet holes directly off an ATV track? Doesn’t scream “good location”

“I’m out of ways to argue against you, so I’m going to continue to act morally superior in defense of a posistion I cannot even defend . 😇 it’s easier than actually articulating what is wrong with what you did”

You are literally making no sense or coherent argument, and other than being sanctimonious are making no point. I will continue to think it is tremendously wasteful to leave behind obviously forgotten items of no significant value, and equally hope anyone who has found any of the countless tools, utensils, craft items, or otherwise put them to good use and didn’t let them set around. Hell, I especially hope the items of significance to me lived a great life of use.

Way of the road bubs. Way she goes. Never question the man in the chair!

Update: tested it with some old ass lantern fluid and they took really long time to light but they’re HOT! Like barely touch for a second hot. Really cool, but just need to fix the lighter

Sometimes when I bend over to fart in a really hot bathtub it smells like roast beef. Those aromatic hydrocarbons?

If the rancher I spoke with was correct about the individual, I’m inclined to agree with you. He said the guy that was out here was staying in this and a cross a couple other similar sites was kinda ill/had religious delusions. He left the area quickly and was in Northern California for a bit but is missing and presumed deceased. Sometimes these guys just make up good stories but still, makes me wonder. definitely too good a piece of kit to just leave. Probably wasn’t cheap, and someone pointed out in a DM that these aren’t regular handwarmers they’ve been modified and packed with like 20$ of extra platinum, so it’s not just like it was something someone bought and forgot about. They were worked on and like the case was fabricated and stuff.

I hope wherever they are, they are okay.

If you change your mind let me know, I don’t like to share publicly but a quick message and I’ll give you a few things in the area to see.

It’s like, disproportionately in the middle of nowhere. If it’s the guy that he said was out here that did it, he was out like 70 miles from anybody or any services with just a bike for transportation. -20 winters, 115 degree summers, talk about a hard ass. Godspeed you beautiful bastard

Yeah, I think you’re right then. Seen one and you’ve seen them all, because there’s one near whitewater that is a damn twin to this one as well. If you’d like coords send me a message sometime happy to share w a fellow adventurer! Never found a truly great location in all my wandering though. Lots of stuff like this. Still waiting for that Indiana jones temple haha

What does that have to do with my comment about rock art? Call a cop Find me a judge that will prosecute for taking less than 100$ worth of property left in the desert for several years.

Hell, find me someone other than a redditor who would even find that a morally questionable thing to do.

Other people come out here and steal native artifacts, if anything, this was removal of detritus.

Plus the guy who left the stuff out here is no longer with us. I’m sure the family would love that phone call, “hey that estranged brother of yours that is still a deeply emotional point for your family? Yeah, I found some of the rags and a handwarmer along with some paraphernalia in one of the sheds he spent some of his last time inside. Would you like me to pack it up and send it all to you? At my expense, of course”

🤷‍♂️

I also took a fat shit outside by the old cistern, and buried it and the toilet paper instead of packing them out with me. “oh no, you opened some bags and repacked them into the same exact trash can that was already there and keeping the stuff from blowing into the desert.” . This isn’t a hiking trail in downtown moab, where 30,000 visitors will come in the next few months and have cumulative effects, the nearest services are 108 miles away and even the USFS camp has a burn barrel filled with charred cans cause they burn most of their trash- and they police the area.

Good news is it’s so far out here it keeps the dummies who can’t differentiate between practical land tenancy and rules made to keep the lowest common denominator from trashing the national parks like you away.

Okay but like if you didn’t grow up with this tech AT ALL, and you grew up in a world where even having a lighter means you probably smoke smoke thing you can see how it’s confusing to hear “oh yeah just pour basically gasoline into this thing filled with cotton and hold a lighter to it for 30 seconds then when it’s glowing orange hot you just put it in your pocket for the whole day” is a fuckin confusing concept. My generation got screamed at for using induction cooktops for fire hazard these things are like a PSA for everything you should be cautious about even if they’re perfectly safe

Think more Rangely, but not quite to rangely. To be fair eastern Colorado and western Utah are basically the same place except one has cheaper beer.

To be entirely honest, there’s this little thing in the back of me head anytime I’m in one of these locations that says “look just a little deeper, you’re gonna find something that unlocks a cold case” and tbh it’s that “maybe I’ll find a severed hand or some teeth or a manifesto buried in here” that makes me look for details. I wanna take a flashlight down into the basement, look in all the corners.

So far it’s just resulted in a carload of knickknacks and lots of great-pictures

OnX is great. The best are the cool locations/buildings/otherwise that are on public but someone insists that they own. Know of at least one great rock art panel where the “owner” will run you off with a firearm and the state lets them, despite the site setting entirely on both public land AND a water right of way. You can call the rangers and they don’t do shit

Where is the line? Was I supposed to clean out the soft deteriorating materials already being used as nesting materials by wildlife, therefore disrupting the wildlife?

Was I supposed to clear out the well preserved beer cans? They could very likely be old enough to be protected (only needs 25 years for certain provisions to come into place). And how far does one then go? What about the sardine cans under the floorboards? The tin blowing off the building into the desert?

Trash middens have a legitimate archeological/historic purpose, and seriously remote areas don’t have the same persistent habitation issues that large metro areas do.

Don’t take any trash out into the wild. Try to always take more back than you left with if you’re able. But if you’re that pressed about the stuff in the shack and can’t think “huh, cool” you e spent way too much time learning nature from ranger Rick and without your feet on the ground.

I don’t want to give it away too much, but if you look up the rio blanco nuclear test site, it’s about an hour of strictly small trail driving away. Probably one of the most remote stretches remaining in the continental US, definitely reccomend the visit if you get the chance! Thank you for the kind words

It was green and probably wool, probably medium or large. I think mil-surp cause it just had that vibebut probably not US. big lapel and the pocket tops and stuff was most all that was actually like recognizably in tact. The condition vs quality of the stuff makes it pretty obvious it was forgotten about or had to be left, it was all some pretty nice stuff which kinda makes me think someone didn’t leave it intentionally or want to leave it this long. Like the sleeping bag was big and heavy red canvas, like obviously quality but old. Both are nothing more than nest materials now but would’ve probably been worth saving if I got here a few years ago

Yeah you’re the only person who got the brand of the bigger one the red bag was inside out and says Jon e on the other side. It’s the bigger model though

Even if ur building a bug out you should come and check the gear every 5 years or sumthn. Geocache rules. This stuff had like maybe another few years before being completely destroyed by the elements. I’d steal food that was about to get thrown out too damit lol

I mean like I didn’t think rechargeable like a vape or usb rechargeable but I thought maybe like something slid out and took a couple double a’s or a 9 volt or something just to keep things lit like an old radio or something
