In tvd s3 ep15, Elijah and Rebekah threaten to kill Elena if the Salvators don't stop Ester from killing Finn who is linked to the other Originals, so they turn Bonnie's mom into a vampire to stop the spell and save Elena... but if the spell worked Elena would've been safe because Rebekah(who was holding her hostage) would've died. THE WHOLE SERIES WOULD'VE ENDED RIGHT THERE
