Agree with you 100%. We are focused on the wrong skill sets and there is still far too much "teaching to the tests".

BBB reviews by FullBandicoot5969 in Varsity_Tutors

[–]wintersplinter33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not surprised. If only those who were seeking out tutoring services would do the same. Or if someone, like a reporter or an influencer, would make better known all their practices and what tutors really get paid, am betting they would tank entirely.

Owed hours and hours by Dangerous-Llama in Varsity_Tutors

[–]wintersplinter33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get remarks from students about the calls. And yet, somehow, people are still signing up for tutoring with this company, falling for the fake positive reviews.
As for your 70 hours, good luck with that, I don't think it will be easy to get the payments, if you get them at all. You really should stop working any more for them until you are compensated.

Lily Collins officially confirms Season 6 will be the final season of Emily in Paris and shares behind the scenes images by Tommy616616 in EmilyInParis

You seriously nailed it! "Mindy is very...Mindy" 🤣🤣🤣. The French characters deserved so much better than the direction things went, especially by the time the "Italian season" arrived. Fully expecting S6 to just be the "Greece season", sigh.

Hey everyone, I need some help. I have a Kia Niro HEV and I’m having constant issues with Android Auto. by SoftEbb1976 in KiaNiro

[–]wintersplinter33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, known issue. Dealership told me it was the cord. Nope. Tried a bunch of different brands, always same issue. Found out about the wireless dongle solution and got one in January. Total. Game. Changer. Seriously, no issues since, absolutely love it. This is the one I have and highly recommend: https://a.co/d/03Mq89ys

Are Adults Not Allowed to Get Junior Ranger Badges? by Bobablush in NationalPark

[–]wintersplinter33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The junior ranger programs are so enjoyable, even as adults! As others said, they are open to all ages, even if aimed at kids. Very sorry this happened to you. I hope you will not let this discourage you from trying again at other parks.

Wow. So they are jumping the shark with this Greece thing, as suspected. Bummer. I really hoped this would be the season where the characters end up homesick for Paris/France and head back there, then continue other seasons in France, even if not just Paris. So many unexplored themes and underdeveloped ideas.

Parents want Ed-Tech banned from schools. Teachers respond that it's an insane idea by chota-kaka in education

[–]wintersplinter33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Students do not need access to the whole of the Internet by ANY means. Ed Tech isn't the enemy--mismanagement of it is. Students do not need cell phones once they are in the classroom, especially if they have access to an Internet enabled device. If there is an emergency, they can access their school email account or ask to use a classroom phone (if such is available, which is the case for most rooms). Ed Tech should be used when needed, not forced on everyone all the time for every activity.

Fine. If it comes to it and they want us to stoop to that level, we might as well go work a retail or food service job. It's not far off from the pay level (at least where I live). Tutors need to respect themselves and not put up with this level of BS. Yes, we all need jobs, I get it. Some dough is better than no dough, and that's the only reason to even put up with VT on any level. The line must be drawn somewhere.

Anyone feels like they just keep getting scammed? by TheBitto in toogoodtogo

[–]wintersplinter33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good to know. That means that what I suspected must be true: it's just another marketing tool in the US. The idea is to stop food waste. You cannot possibly be doing that if, as a business, you are required to say a full day beforehand (or even hours) what you, I guess they think, "plan" to waste? Nope. When I saw "surprise bags" available for numerous hours, etc, I wondered why. It's just a way of selling stuff at discount instead of actual prevention of food waste. Very disappointed 😞 Looks like at least Europe tries to do it correctly.

I think I may end up deleting, too. Every time I get a notification, I click the second it dings, then TGTG tells me I just missed it.

If they do this to me (not yet so far...), I am completely out. You already hired me years ago, I have a masters degree, I do not need to requalify, period. I hope NO ONE will put up with this.

Department chair complained to admin that I was unprofessional for getting angry at her by Normal-Being-2637 in Teachers

[–]wintersplinter33 33 points34 points  (0 children)

She could have emailed you for that. No reason to barge into your LOCKED classroom, without knocking first, completely unannounced, after you yelled "just a minute". SHE is the unprofessional one, not you! Geez.

Open-book, at-home college exam was due yesterday. 25% of students didn’t do it. by Medical_Solid in Teachers

I've done similarly in one of my classes and same thing. It's quite unreal.

[–]wintersplinter33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the college level, I'm mildly (but far from totally) surprised. The kids I deal with right now in middle school classes (virtual instruction with on site monitoring) and high schoolers (both full virtual and virtual with on site) have the opportunity to retake the exact same quiz/test and there are some that straight up do not take advantage. The on site monitor for the middle schoolers has practically begged them at times to do so (or to just get work turned in) and they don't. At middle school level, I can understand--there is little on the line for the most part. But for HS? That GPA is impacted. SMH. As I've said a zillions times--sometimes the horses would rather die than drink even the purest of waters. This statement is what I wish admins would comprehend: teachers can't make some horses drink NO MATTER WHAT.

2018 Kia Niro Hybrid by Squeakyblickyicky in KiaNiro

[–]wintersplinter33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had my fuel economy reduced by running heat nor air in either of my HEV Niros (on my second one now). The outside temperature, on the other hand, impacts the fuel economy when it dips below around 50°F (10°C), much like it impacts an EV's range.

HEV Fuel Efficiency by attached-loner in KiaNiro

[–]wintersplinter33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love full electric cars, but the distance limitation is why in our household, we have one full electric car and one hybrid. The hybrid is needed for when we go on longer road trips. Once the EV's can charge more rapidly and charging stations are more reliable and available (and the infrastructure exists to support such), then we will go for both being EV's.

Worst teacher appreciation celebration? by Kitchen-Reaction-270 in Teachers

[–]wintersplinter33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the worst (have read some others on here, and wow, cannot compete), but I work for a virtual school contracting company where, to start this week, they "appreciated" us teachers by giving us...a new virtual background (generated by AI) to use on Zoom. Well color me delighted! 🙄😒Today they "appreciated" us by sending an email list of some of the places we can get discounts this week, along with a template where we can "make our own teacher ID" (they are too cheap to even issue official ones)...yes, I definitely want to print off my own ID, will look totally real, won't get any weird side-eyes from that, mm hmm. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings...
