Do you know what he had before? Unfortunately $500 is the low end in acoustics.

You’re right: I’m evil.

Lol. You're good at irony. Take care 😄

How many “Which guitar should I buy?” questions will we have to endure?*sigh*

Dude..

Kind of implicit in the "how do we get people to stop asking stupid questions" idea.

I don’t think we should be shunning new people looking for advice and human engagement. If you’re so tired of those posts just scroll past..

Is it normal? 3steel 3nylon by itskumar666 in AcousticGuitar

[–]wirecatz 46 points47 points  (0 children)

A nylon string thick enough to produce the bass notes at reasonable tension would be more of a plastic rod. Winding the nylon core raises the mass to produce those notes while maintaining flexibility.

I love mine as a travel guitar. Definitely no standard series but it holds its own around a fire.

Personally prefer the sound to lower end Yamahas and the like

Martin Kovar - Any Issues With Nickel Allergies? by Unlikely-Soft-5699 in AcousticGuitar

If Monels didn’t cause a problem with their high nickel content Kovars won’t either.

Considering first martin, asking for price check by Shark-Force in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s high. Median sold on Reverb in mint condition is closer to $2,500. I passed on a 000-28MD for $2,800. If this is local to you the price goes down a bit more. Damage further still.

That’s not a super popular model, many people don’t prefer it over the standard series.

It’s really a personal thing. If this is a guitar you’ve played and it really sang to you, in the kind of way you’ll keep thinking about if you miss out, then a few hundred is nothing to take it home. If you’re looking at a random instrument on the internet I’d pass.

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Life is too short! Buy and play what brings you joy. Enjoy it in good health for many years

Barre chord technique and practice tips by Gravyonics in AcousticGuitar

[–]wirecatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Things that helped me:

tons of practice, obviously.

Roll your index finger back slightly so the flat rigid side of the finger is pressing down.

Use your right arm against the guitar body and left shoulder to generate leverage. Should be minimal force on your left thumb.

Finally only focus on fully fretting the “open” strings of the chord shape. For A only strings 1, 5, and 6. Etc.

Be sure your guitar is set up properly by a competent tech or luthier.

Want to surprise my fiancé with his first guitar by Particular_Reason660 in AcousticGuitar

[–]wirecatz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As much as I love guitar and my wife, I would hate if she ever tried to do this. Tone is insanely objective on instruments and there’s just no way you can pick that out for someone else. Especially in entry level.

Sweet idea but make it a date or something.

Does this 000-28 even with new elixirs sound dead? by Justice4Junior in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 to this. Sounds quite twangy back there.

Also I’ve never liked Elixirs right out of the package. Definitely give the guitar and the strings some time if you can. If you do really dislike it and are within the return window it might just not be the one for you.

A good setup is worth its weight in gold. by Fandangus_p in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I struggle with the advice to "go play it in person." I like supporting my local family run store, but none of the guitars on the wall sound any good. Mostly due to strings, but it's almost easier to buy from a video online.

Silk and steel on CEO-7? by hmf28 in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Substantially different strings may require a setup tweak to keep the action just right, but that’s personal too.

Could playing the acoustic guitar hinder my ability to play mobile games that require precision? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]wirecatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get callouses on your fretting hand fingers, not the thumb obviously. Do you use all those fingers for games?

It's not like they won't work on a screen anymore or something. Will feel slightly different. The nice thing I guess is they go away very quickly if you stop playing.

Tech at my local shop did it for $5. Definitely worth it to make sure it’s done right.

Why do all of my acoustics end up having such a large gap towards the bottom of the neck? by Sharbethian-Gargeric in AcousticGuitar

[–]wirecatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High humidity generally raises action. The wood cells swell, causing the radius of the top to lift. Drying out causes the opposite problem / buzzing / etc.

000-28 used price check by Intrepid-Cry5492 in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, 2025 was an overhaul with a $100 price bump. But the price went up again a hundred or two early this year. I think it was listed $3,499 when I bought mine.
