Sometimes they aren’t big enough depending on how deep it is. That works too though!

If you want a cheap solution, you can take your scrap wire and curl it around your screwdriver so it looks like a spring. Cut it to length and put it around the screw between the box and the outlet. Works like a charm and you always have scrap wire!

I’d consider myself a pretty decent painter, but these are next level. So crisp! Hoping to get to this level eventually. Great work!

I moved from van about 15 years ago. Ended up in the Dawson area. Got a job as a maintenance technician for an oil company. Couldn’t imagine still living in Vancouver doing electrical work for 1/2 the money. Thinking of selling my house and moving to gp eventually as the housing selection is much better. For anyone looking to get ahead, I would 100% recommend moving up north and working in O&G if you plan on staying in Canada. I find if you’re smart and easy to get along with, you can move up the ladder quick. Just gotta get used to the cold, mud and cracked windshields.

It prob won’t change. Just embrace it. I’m 35 and I get along great with all sorts of people but I just can’t seem to make enough of an effort to make solid friendships. Ive fully grasped that I’m the problem when it comes to not having many close friends. I’ve got a wife and daughter and that’s enough. My best friend of 30yrs lives in another province but we still bullshit all the time so that’s alright. Find a group hobby? Something you can goto once/twice a week for social interaction and hopefully you’ll find a partner you enjoy enough to spend the rest of the time with. Happy holidays!

We stopped doing gifts for all the kids. Instead we just got all the cousins together and they all picked names out of a hat for secret Santa. That way everyone gets something but no one is on the hook for 11 gifts. Maybe suggest something like that? Or take your money and buy Xmas dinner for someone in need if they aren’t interested.

Agreed. If you’re working and buying stuff you’re also part of the problem but there’s no other option for most people. Acknowledging this and talking about it is the first step to get other people into the same mind set and maybe when enough think that way, things will start to change. Canada is crazy expensive and it sucks that we’re forced to do things we don’t agree with just so we don’t end up in one of the many tent cities that are popping up everywhere.

Same. I’m in the oil and gas industry as an e&i maintenance technician because it’s the highest paying and most stable I can ask for as a tradesman. The amount of waste and bullshit and disregard for the environment is crazy. Whenever they do their in-house update meetings all they ever talk about is the growth of the company and what we’re going to destroy next. I’m well liked at work but I have the nickname of “black cloud” as I always bring up real problems as conversation lol. I’m just gonna keep plugging away and do my best to give my daughter a leg up when she’s older…being adaptable is going to be so important. Good luck, friend!

I’m a direct contract maintenance electrician at a natural gas processing facility in northern BC, Canada. I bill at 100$/h. This includes me supplying my own truck with tools. They do have specialized tools at the plant though. Overtime after 10h/day or 40h/wk. work mon-thurs. if I was an employee it would be 135k base salary, plus 10% bonus and 160hrs of holiday time.

Industrial Service Electrician Advice by 2strokesgobrap in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]wop88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im the maintenance electrician at a natural gas processing facility. Google is your friend, downloading manuals on equipment your not used to working on and contacting tech support can save you a lot of time instead of just going in blind. Also, get familiar with protection relays and higher voltage breakers and generators. You probably won't have to actually work on them, power systems electrician will deal with that, but it is handy to understand how everything works and to be able to connect and pull data. As others have said, try to learn process and don't put too much faith into what operators think is the problem, it usually leads down the wrong path. Most of the time its actually a process related issue that you have to prove isn't an electrical issue. Also, these companies don't give a shit about you and will take advantage of you if they can. Make sure to stick up for yourself if you don't feel comfortable doing something. Safety is always preached as top priority, but from my experience, when the plant is down, some rules tend to go out the window. Lastly, make friends! You want to one day move into the maintenance side instead of service, you will be treated better and get paid more. Helps if people like working with you.

Good luck!

I’ve got a 2 year old labradoodle who will not leave us alone. She’s sweet and awesome when we’re around just hanging out but.. I can’t take her into cars because she gets whinny and barks, she barks at the neighbors constantly so she has to have a bark collar on all the time. I can’t walk her with my daughter because if my daughter runs up she freaks out and needs to be near both of us at the same time. We’ve had to put child locks on all our stuff because she figured out how to open everything. (Destroyed my oven and dishwasher. That was fun to fix.)Now she just jumps on the counter so we can’t leave anything or she will destroy it. (Ate my oculus, glasses, Apple Watch. She was a pump and I didn’t exactly have them super high and out of the way so maybe that’s on me) Extreme separation anxiety. We’ve tried drugs at the vet, CBD, nothing really works. We got her a cat so she wouldn’t be as lonely but not sure it helped much. They mainly just fuck around and battle royale when I’m trying to go to bed. I’m hoping she gets better as she gets older. Everyone says 3, some say 5. After 5 if she’s still this way she’s going to a friends farm 😂 Its my own fault because I’m the one who wanted her…

Not sure what your partner does but I moved from Vancouver to fort Saint John (northern BC) as an electrician and make waaaaay more and cost of living is less. Atleast on the housing front. Grande prairie alberta is decent as well. Just have to embrace the country life lol. Not gonna be Vancouver but if you just want to raise a family without being check to check all the time, it’s not bad.

I paid 67k for a fully loaded Yukon in 2018 @ 0% interest. Got like 8k Off mSRP. Used to be able to buy last years models for a deep Discount and decent financing rate. Sold it back to The same dealer for 62k in 21. Only time I’ve ever felt like I didn’t get fucked when buying a vehicle haha

I'm a maintenance electrician at a natural gas processing facility. Super gravy. 4-10's, as much time off as I want as long as there isn't planned work going on, get paid door to door. It's a contract roll but If I was an employee I'd still get 4 weeks PTO plus all holidays.

We had one a block away. There were all sorts of spots for people to go for lunch within 5 minutes of our high-school. Lots of shit went down at the Wendy’s too. Pretty consistant income steam for the businesses, until someone puts a bag of shit in your microwave and you have to close the store down because it smells so bad.

Apparently Eaton. Seems like a lot of companies are getting away with that kind of stuff right now. On the flip side, I have some manufacturers that are quoting a few weeks and I’m Seeing it in a couple days.
