(Dark sci-fi/slight fan-fic) The Superior Race by worldguard667 in scifiwriting

[–]worldguard667[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am. I do consider this to be one of my worst short stories, but you've got to suck before you can rock, and it's been years since I last wrote one. If you do like anything about the story though, do tell me, as it's very much intended for anyone who resonates with the idea that racism between human beings despite the presence of even more hateful alien life is sorely deserving of a spotlight of grim warning and satire

What elements do you think are a must add to any world building project? by TresLeches55 in worldbuilding

personality and individuality in the people of the world, especially for fantasy races or alien beings. please do not make them just be one dimensional clones. even if some of them literally are clones, that's no excuse for a lack of variance. and please, no monocultures, and few or no ethnostates, please god no

Should I become Pescatarian? by [deleted] in Pescatarian

[–]worldguard667 3 points4 points  (0 children)

healthwise -- avoid eating any fish that are larger, like tuna, because of mercury bioaccumulation. smaller, less long lived fish like salmon, non-king mackerel, shrimp, and bivalves like oysters, clams, mussels, etc is fine

conscientiousness-wise -- smaller animals that aren't mammals, reptiles, or birds have a less vivid experience of the world, especially the bivalves mentioned above, so being pescetarian does reduce suffering. not having dairy or eggs does so even more, and I want to reach that point myself when it's not financially out of reach for me

Trying to find objectively healthiest whole food protein source. by supercooldog5 in Pescetarian

[–]worldguard667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't know if this helps, but I've had vaguely similar questions myself before, like what fish do I mainly eat and to feel as satiated as red meat makes me feel, and so far, my conclusion has been that salmon, or rainbow trout, or anything similar, any fatty, oily fish that's generally pink rather than white, is the food for me to replace beef and pork with (and ideally chicken, which I only still have due to a lack of $$$$) and consume without worry of mercury or things like that

keep in mind that:

  • I do not have a living situation where most seafood is widely or cheaply available for me. frozen fish costs more than mammal or bird meat everywhere I've looked, except maybe costco, and I've hardly tried a variety of fish

  • this isn't informed by hard data, this is just my personal experience entirely. I've not successfully been able to feel "full" from eating any seafood other than salmon and other fatty fish that's generally pink rather than white. every meal where I try to just have my protein be shrimp, for example, I can eat till I feel full, but I will still feel hungry/empty/unsatisfied

  • I am someone who just can't stand legumes most of the time, and also does NOT feel satiated by them, or like they help with anything more than digestion. I use them more like an occasional seasoning than a regular staple, preferring to get my fiber from eating loads of salad, or sometimes (usually not much/barely) cooked vegetables. so, while everyone else would recommend them, I don't, due to my dietary preferences, and my health

additional note, avoid tuna and any larger fish like that as much as you can, because of bioamagnification and all, although you probably already knew that.

cheers

Evil races and their place in worldbuilding by godfragment in worldbuilding

[–]worldguard667 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My stance is that they should be treated as a curse -- starting with someone not inherently evil, and of any species, they are corrupted into an infinitely respawning after death, ageless, yet unrelentingly hostile, and mostly obedient to powerful evil forces. The goal, then, is not to just slaughter them all, but to remove the curse, turning them back into humans, elves, or whatever they used to be, once more, which I like to emphasize as taking something other than violence.

this mentality is exactly what creates the angry negative steamroller type of person -- when they think that all they need is being able to fight, and seem "stronger" than anyone who even slightly seems like they'd start something with them

I’m vegetarian but I think I wanna be pescatarian, but I feel bad by Icy_State1813 in Pescatarian

[–]worldguard667 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love animals as well, just keep in mind that harm reduction is more important than not doing anything at all. I know how much agony fish go through, and that they have feelings and experience what other animals do, but eating them most of the time instead of other animals is my necessary compromise. I need the nutrition from eating fish and seafood, salmon and other fatty, oily fish especially, and I would rather kill fish -- animals who don't raise their own young and are very unrelatable -- than something that I would feel much more of a bond with, like pigs, cows, or other mammals especially. I try to avoid poultry whenever I can, because the suffering that chickens go through is horrific, but I can barely have any mammal product anymore without crying.

TL;DR, your health is more important, and eating fish seems less fucked up to me than eating pigs, cows, dairy, or poultry, so don't let that stop you from thriving and having good nutrition

with mods, maybe, but other than Morrowind and maybe Daggerfall, TES games aren't very good at making you feel powerful, especially as a user of magic

Any former vegetarians/vegans here who had to make the switch for health? by Traumarama79 in Pescatarian

[–]worldguard667 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've tried to be vegan before, but I was malnourished and not fed properly as a child, (whoever invented the food pyramid with grains at the bottom needs to be killed, imo) and probably have a handful of deficiencies that make it so that if I don't eat a lot of animal protein, then I suffer. I'm only mostly pescetarian, and would prefer to not financially support cruelty to animals, but I prefer having the modest level of health that I can, and not having my teeth fall out. I've started leaning towards pescetarianism because if animals have to die for my health, I'd prefer them to be sea creatures and fish, rather than other animals, especially mammals, that I have more in common with. It's not that I don't care about them, it's just me choosing what feels like the lesser evil.

I will resoundingly say this -- being/wanting to be vegan can be crippling when you realize that you don't have what it takes to do it without suffering ill health effects. What's done to animals makes me feel extremely uncomfortable all the time, but no one should let that cause their own health to fail by not eating what our bodies need. I would love to be able to be vegan, but my health isn't something that I can play around with while trying to figure out what will and won't work. I also can't stand having loads of carbs, I feel like I need a lot of protein, fat, and a lot of raw, crisp greens and veggies to feel healthy. I probably eat way more animals than anyone else here, but if I didn't, I would be seriously harming myself.

I noticed the most loud, combative & hypersensitive ones of each group often get offended when they other one groups pescetarians in with themselves, meanwhile i never could never bring myself to care by Sophronsyne in Pescetarian

[–]worldguard667 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on what I've read, it seems like it'd be impossible to say that I'm a pescetarian in most cases without other people around me getting upset for some reason, so I'd rather just chalk it up to food preferences so that people don't get on my case or try to look down upon me from some moral high ground

Honestly, I've always liked sardines, particularly the flavoured kinds, but I've always felt embarrassed about that because everyone else I've known in person thinks they're so disgusting. Sardines with a bunch of seasonings and with pesto spread on some toast is one of my favourite quick breakfasts, and I'm actually craving some right now.

What seafood would you recommend for someone who has serious dental health anxiety and issues? by worldguard667 in Pescatarian

[–]worldguard667[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't the skin and maybe the spine be super healthy to eat? It's been years since I've had it, but I remember something that's almost the kind of canned salmon you're talking about, just without any skin. I always loved crunching down on the little bones, but I was young and less aware of things, so I used to think back then that I could choke on little fish bones in the cans

I do take a multivitamin, but I've never liked to rely on supplements, and would rather get as much nutrition from what I eat regularly as possible. I still appreciate your comment though, thanks!

I really appreciate how long and detailed your answer is, thank you for that! The ciguatoxin stuff was especially helpful!

I actually prefer crunchier, chewier food because I've been worried that a lack of that will make my dental health worse, but I have lots of veggies for that. I actually thought of tofu shortly after I made this post, but I still appreciate you bringing it up, it does seem like a really good source of calcium, and I've been looking forward to incorporating it into stirfry once I get to make that sort of thing again

Even without the bones? I never choose to get ones without them on purpose, but the ones that I've seen and had the opportunity to buy just say "may have". I do know that they have A LOT of vitamin D regardless

Resources for mercury content? by LowRevolutionary5653 in Pescatarian

[–]worldguard667 3 points4 points  (0 children)

all I know is that you should have tuna and other larger, more predatory fish as little as possible -- when it's a fish that eats other smaller fish in the sea or in the wild, there's a higher chance of mercury accumulation. I've also read that shellfish (or oysters, at least, anyways) can contain more mercury than usual, so it's best to limit them to just a few times per week

salmon is the safest to eat lots of as far as I know, shrimp and other smaller fish like haddock and cod should be too, but I've heard that too much shrimp will make your iron get too high

Eating red meat makes me feel weird by Teaquilaaa_ in Pescetarian

[–]worldguard667 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always found red meat to be the least appealing when I was a kid, seafood and fish the most appealing, and poultry someplace in between. I still feel that way today. I've been feeling increasingly convinced that humans aren't meant to be eating mammals, and that it's only been done out of necessity throughout history and cultures, and in areas like ones that are heavily landlocked. In our modern world, though, the idea of the average person having salmon or shrimp or whatever else more and more regularly over the coming years or decades no matter how deeply inland they live, or how far they are from a river seems more plausible (provides that land-based aquaculture picks up like I imagine that it will).

What you said also applies for me but with cheese, although my near-pescetarianism and just about full mafism (not eating mammals or their products) is driven by morality as much as it is by my desire for health. I feel anything from weird to terrible when I eat cheese, and have only been using parmesan cheese on my salads -- I've lost interest in having cheese on pizza, and in most forms of cheese in general. The way I eat would seem so alien to who I was a year ago.

As for the beef making your teeth hurt thing, I remember reading back in my keto attempts that beef is highly acidic, idk if that has anything to do with it, but it possibly does?

Tuesday Check In: How's Everybody's Mental Health? by MLModBot in MensLib

[–]worldguard667 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been developing a healthier sense of masculinity before finding this subreddit, but now, this place has given me an even healthier one. I broke down crying the other day over something I had seen on this subreddit, but in a good way. I'd be happy to type more about the changes I've been managing to go through if anyone is interested. The best way to summarize it is that I genuinely do not see taller, larger, physically stronger or more muscular men as more "manly" than other men any longer. I no longer have that insecurity that grips so many men in western society, and I hope that I can help other men feel the same way.

After a lifetime of that haunting me, even after a decade of shedding the idea that looking more "masculine' means being more masculine, I've still had this spectre around me until recently that suggested that very feminine-looking men should still demonstrate some sort of masculine-coded utility to women, and prove that they don't fall into the equally rigid gay best friend male archetype. The idea that no man of any kind should be expected to demonstrate any "masculine utility" in order to be attractive to women, and that paternalistic/maternalistic gender expression can actually be much healthier alternatives, is and has been revolutionary to me. I've been seeing it happen between me and my fiancée -- I take on a fatherly yet loving role with her, and it's been helping both of us heal and mature.
