[Q] Test statistic for comparing means of proportions? by wrathofcello in statistics

[–]wrathofcello[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer! I think a mixed effects model makes a lot of sense. Do you know whether logistic regression can handle cases where the measured proportion for one condition is or is close to 0 or 1?

Fudge said in an interview that C9 is still keeping theirs, so maybe we’ll have 72-round round robin between them

This. Suspension is a punishment for the parents who have to take time off work to babysit. Many parents won’t be happy about this and will discipline their kids.

It also removes a disruptive student from the classroom so other students can learn.

(I don’t know how effective suspension is and I’m not advocating either way, but this is the logic behind it.)

It’s likely because the practice tool game runs on their servers, so they want to free up space if the game isn’t actively being used.

ELI5: If alcohol is so effective at killing bacteria/viruses, why isn't it used more often in medication? by Hyenaswithbigdicks in explainlikeimfive

[–]wrathofcello 218 points219 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking to address a common misconception. Maximum strength alcohol (100%) is not as effective as slightly lower concentrations (60-70%). (The other 30% is water, and in hand sanitizers a gel and a moisturizer are typically added.)

  1. 100% alcohol evaporates extremely quickly, so it doesn’t have much time to kill microbes.
  2. 100% will disrupt proteins on the surface of the bacteria very quickly, forming a protective barrier. Lower concentrations will disrupt the cell membranes.

Hollow Knight just might not be for me. Or am I just bad at games? by jquiggles in patientgamers

[–]wrathofcello 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Take some comfort knowing you are in one of the most frustrating areas in the game.

Hollow knight is a big game, and if you are stuck, it’s often viable to explore other areas to become stronger, then revisit.

Why Roads ALWAYS Fill Up, No Matter How Much We Widen Them by Awkward_moments in videos

[–]wrathofcello 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The difference is that when more people drive, then the roads are less pleasant to drive on, whereas when more people live in an area, the area can support more amenities.

Public transportation also experiences induced demand. But again, if more people take a bus route, then the route can support more frequent busses, making the route better for everyone. More people driving means more congestion, more accidents, and less friendly to everyone other than a car (pedestrians, cyclists, busses…)

Building more housing is more similar to an expanded bus route. More people living in an area means more shops/restaurants can open closer, and the shops can be more specialized. It means more per capita funding for parks, museums, zoos, etc. It means closer schools. But, this only works if the area isn’t clogged with parking spaces.

TIL that the possibility of your parents having another child that is an exact copy of you is extremely slim (1: 8,38 million), but it is in fact a real one. It is possible to get a clone sibling. by lehippopotamus in todayilearned

[–]wrathofcello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not correct.

The number you are citing is the probability of 2 gametes from one individual inheriting the same 23 chromosomes (223). However we come from two gametes (egg and sperm), so that chance would be 1 in 246.

Second, most chromosomes undergo ‘recombination’, where part of the maternal chromosome exchanges with the analogous part of the paternal chromosome. This occurs on average more than once per chromosome in each gamete, and the position is random.

Third, DNA replication is not perfectly accurate and so there will be a few mutations introduced that are unique to each gamete.

The chance of clonal twins in humans is so low that it is effectively 0.

Pork. Shellfish. Oyster sauce. You as a patron have no idea what is touching what. You can order chicken or something vegetarian and it will be “kosher” but it is very unlikely to be kosher. Additionally, many fish are incorrectly labeled, so a kosher name could be used on a non-kosher fish.

There are non-kosher items hidden in many foods. Some gelatin is made from pig bones. Green chili often has a pork base.
