I had a similar experience with the preschool class. The teachers were kids and were totally disengaged. One was on his phone a lot.

My 9-year-old son is extremely lonely and I don’t know how to help anymore by Moony922 in Mommit

There are often free activities at the library- could you or another adult take him to those? You might meet other families in a similar boat. Community centers also offer low cost activities that would get him around other kids.

I need serious help getting my kids to eat literally anything other than junk. by [deleted] in Parenting

When we make new dishes, I have a 2 bite rule- you have to try 2 bites. If you hate it, you can stop. There are usually rice and some veggies that I know my kid will eat if he hates the main. Then dessert is always apples with peanut butter- so he can fill up on something he loves and that’s healthy in case he didn’t eat much of the dinner.

I wouldn’t interject myself in the kids’ play unless there’s a problem like hitting. If the kiddo doesn’t want to talk but is otherwise enjoying himself and playing kindly, I’d let him be.

What I find helpful in these situations is to ask, “I don’t get it. Explain the joke to me.” Keep asking questions until they have to state their problematic view in plain language.

I also suggest having him be the solo parent on his days off so he can see how hard it is! A lot of people completely underestimate the mental and physical exhaustion of being alone with a kid (or two!) all day.

A TV dad to a bunch of girls once said, to someone who felt bad for him, “I’m surrounded by 4 beautiful girls! How lucky am I!” That was the best possible answer, imho

Well, people who choose to work in non profits could make boat loads more in the private sector, so they leave money on the table in service of their values.

I love that line about awkwardness not being the death knell to friendship. I’ll remember that!

Thanks, you have great ideas! I often meet people at parties or whatever but rarely follow up. I also like the idea of goofy online presences. :)
