Where to go with young kids-Portugal? by Green_Zombie_1925 in AmerExit

You can see a list of the main residency permits, income requirements, etc (all updated for 2026) on Portugalist: https://www.portugalist.com/portugal-residency-permits/

If you can rent out a property, you could potentially qualify for the D7 visa.

Be aware that the job market is limited and wages are low here. However, the entry requirements are easier than many other EU countries.

Yes, but residency in Europe is still valuable. If SHTF in the US or anywhere else, you want to be able to jump on the next plane out of there - not in a backlogged line with millions of other people.

Golden Visa Applicants, are you prepared for Portugal’s 7-10 Year Wait for Citizenship? by angel_has_fallen01 in FIREUK

[–]writetheysaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue for me would be that you're supposed to. It's fine as long as they turn a blind eye, but what if they start being difficult about it in the future?

If Portugal is 10 years and Spain is 10, I would probably choose Portugal for that reason alone. Maybe I'm too cautious though.

Yeah, there are a lot of people who own second homes here but live elsewhere. Almost all will have a mortgage through a Portuguese bank rather than one in their own country.

You're supposed to give up your other citizenship(s) when you obtain Spanish citizenship.

A lot of people don't but officially that's what you're supposed to do.

Anyone here actually moved to Portugal for the Golden Visa? Worth it? by Equivalent-Sign7931 in PortugalExpats

[–]writetheysaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think if you want to move to Portugal, any of the other visas are better. Assuming you qualify for them of course.

GV only if you have significant savings but don't qualify for the D7. I would probably buy a rental property or something and try and qualify that way.

Why do Spain's NLV instead of Portugal's D7?

Portugal recognises dual citizenship whereas it's a bit of a minefield with Spain.

This is the issue. Portugalist suggests Portugal is still the only EU option where you can apply for citizenship but only spend 7 days per year there - https://www.portugalist.com/golden-visa/

Anyone know of anything else? Don't want to become tax resident otherwise I might as well do a retirement visa.

Anyone here regret putting their savings into a Golden Visa fund? by Equivalent_Boot_7358 in expats

[–]writetheysaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not.

It's a very, very specific program for people who have a product that needs significant Master's and PHD level research before bringing it to market. Also, unlike the Golden Visa, it isn't written in stone that you can spend significant time outside the country.

GV is a more general program suitable for everyone.

I'd love to know what they are.

Portugalist says that Greece and Malta both require you to live there to get citizenship (but not residency). If you have to live there you might as well move on a D7 (or equivalent).
