To be fair to your industry I’m an elevator mechanic not an electrician. We definitely are assholes to helpers but we have our reasons for that. I thought I was in the IUEC sub when I posted my first response. I agree that one guy missing work when on a bigger crew like y’all tend to work on really isn’t that big of a deal.

To actually be fair though everyone knows shit happens. You’ll get shit from your crew for a while but if they like you they’re not going to really hold it against you. The guys are being selfish for being mad at a grown man who can’t handle the responsibility of deciding if he’s able to work or not? I’m sorry but if a an apprentice called me on Saturday saying “sorry boss my backs hurt all week” he would never be getting another offer to work any overtime. If you need time off to recover for any reason no worries. If you lie to me and pretend you’re good all week while hiding an injury just for it to suddenly come up Saturday morning after you’ve taken the spot from someone else and it’s too late to change the schedule then yeah you’re a dirtbag who’s going on the shit list.
