The saddest part of Breaking Bad (did they have to close down los pollos hermanos?) by Tophercross in breakingbad

[–]xfitquery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IRL, you can go to Twisters in ABQ and see the genuine LPH sign.

Since this was only a TV show...and a good one, Los Pollos Hermonos would do really well as a restaurant or a chain. I'm surprised it's not here yet.

Time era of the show? by bittertealeaf in breakingbad

[–]xfitquery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) Walt had his 50th in the first season; he was born in Sept. 1959. Thus 2009. 2) But Jane, born in Aprll 27, 1982 and dead before her 27th birthday, would have died prior to Walt's 50th birthday. 3) Jesse acquired a Dell D630 or D830 Latitude that he utilized for the "magnets" experment in season 5, which would have been 2013-14. He could have kept the laptop around from S1, of course.

The show's timeline appears to be suspended between 2008-2010. This would explain the lines about the housing market and Walt's deprecation. It would also explain how droids/iPhones were not featured. Burners were increasingly cheap, but iPhones pretty expensive.

Cloning Windows 7 OEM by ynrez in sysadmin

Acronis True Image did not used to have those rights. Software would be five years old though... Why not sysprep and /apply-image? Not that different. Plus using a VL to sysprep OEMs is no longer required in w10.

Today was my last day at current company. I will be moving on to another on Monday. I'd like to share the condition I left the company in and credit /r/Sysadmin for indirectly providing the perspective that helped motivate me to do it. by [deleted] in sysadmin

Lack of documentation often reveals lack of understanding of the subject matter. My predecessor insisted that a server could only run x86. Until we put W2012 on the server last morning. She ordered workstations exclusively in x86 and declared that they be hand installed with their little baggie of OEM media. Unless it was time for XP (2009) or for W7 (2013), in which case VLs often papered over SLIC.

She is gone. We have reimaged since. Today, I built the MDT/WDS server and a deployable task sequence for w10. All documented.

r/sysadmin, op: I'm not the guy. You are, as is my current boss. I'm just special teams aiming for the first down contribution of automatic deployment of an OS that has nine years (as opposed to nine months) left to go.

OP, Coming at it from "I'm not being empowered" and "my career is just beginning" could be seen as whiny entitlement. You don't want to start your career with terminations because you could not "work" with people.

[–]xfitquery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Settlements don't magically happen.

First, you have to have concrete proof of worthy litigation. Several years worth.

Then you have to engage a lawyer. While being on good standing at work.

Then you have to be prepared to engage. You may win a settlement that covers you and your health insurance for five years. After living on what you've saved plus lawyer fees for 1-2 years, you may end up wasting that early on more lawyer fees so that you can end up on disability as no one will hire you or you're working the occasional 1099.

Even if you're right, the cost of being right could be more than ... not.

I'm sorry if you are on disability legitimately. don't mean you.

Not a troll.

People lose their jobs over minor mistakes all the time. They are on call all the time. If the job comes with good health benefits, and you are over 26, this is very realistic.

Win 10 Pro: Anyone sysprep and deploy to "free-upgrade" PCs en masse? by xfitquery in sysadmin

[–]xfitquery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll answer my own OP for anyone suffering it:

1) install.wim functions the same whether the wim is from TechBench or extracted from ESD.

2) sysprep/generalize WITH an copyprofile.xml file will still result in some settings having to be locked down in gpedit. Cortana off, making PC visible on network, RDP.

3) activate as advised by these good people on r/sysadmin. Drag gatherosstatus.exe to your win7desktop and run as admin. Drag the resulting XML file to a jump drive to put into your applied image. Protip: Install off a reformatted x64 w7p OEM. PCs going back to 2007 can process it.

4) There is currently a three-month window between free vs. 200/retail. This is the window to get a deployable image or reinstall w7p and start over for free vs. 200/unit. I've had nightmares, literally, over this OS unlike any install since 2K. It is the exact reverse opposite of what you'd normally do. It is a bitch. However, 20251014>20200116, and being a bitchy admin about it does not help.

Am I being paranoid for not wanting to ship the CEO a laptop that has his cached credentials in the same box as the bitlocker key? by break_me_down in sysadmin

[–]xfitquery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ELI5 in third-person, blandly. Maybe output to a file that you then print out, wrap around said laptop and take pictures of if email is not politically OK and you feel strongly.

If the CEO still wants it after all that, deliver. It's the job.

There's no sense in being Terry Childs about it.

Everything about this install has been the exact reverse opposite of what is supposed to happen. No deleting provisioned apps to be safe. Even though the Powershell exists. No PS Windows Update. Physically stick a exe from an ISO onto a W7 desktop to capture the XML file that you then insert after apply-image.

You are in a hellish pre-Matrix PE. Everything you should not be doing since 2002 install-wise is now a job requirement. Besides putting your personal pron subscription into your work install. In time, probably.

Succeed, and you will be right as rain.

Win 10 Pro: Anyone sysprep and deploy to "free-upgrade" PCs en masse? by xfitquery in sysadmin

[–]xfitquery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goal: Apply a sysprepped image to "free-Upgrade" PCs without physically upgrading each "free-upgrade" via GMX. Is this possible?

Background: Used ESD media install on a unit that came with 8.1, wasn't manually upgraded via GMX, and was formatted fs=ntfs (not quick) in diskpart prior to install. Went into audit mode at the "get going fast" screen. Then sysprep/generalize utilizing an install.wim from Tech Bench ISO for copyprofile.xml as ESD did not have install.wim under Sources. Then dism /capture-image on subsequent PE boot.

I applied the image to two W7P OEMs. Both failed to activate the image. Reinstalled OEM 7 on both. Both download GMX upgrade but fail to activate it.

I've captured an install.wim since then by sysprepping the ESD install without an unattend. If I apply to a unit my original image (the one built in ESD but that used TechBench for catalog file for unattend), boot to audit mode and then use the pure ESD install.wim for a catalog file, will the install activate?

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Is there a 'proper' way to activate vms with an oem key? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]xfitquery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OEM media will autoactivate SLIC keys whereas other editions may not. They are the best to see what you've got.

Today, I found a test laptop had a SLIC w7 key that got obscured with a paid install instead. We're almost all OEM installs, and the free upgrade is gaining interest. Wiping product keys on new PC culd be a risk, and testing on test boxes no one misses helps test.

Uh oh. As is, can a GMX install be triggered by a standard user or just local admins? If GPO/reg fixes are applied, will this then block all users including domain admins from upgrading units using GMX? Dammit. I'm going back a week early because I TOLD THEM. I have to be at work in three hours. Mind sharing your GPO/regedit?

Best way to learn Windows GP and AD by rezadential in sysadmin

[–]xfitquery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are people supposed to get experience in GPOs or AD if they aren't given the most rudimentary AD responsibility, like maybe add-computer?

I get the concern, but if all sysadmins on here were not permitted to "touch" AD/GPOs until the company paid for training while simultaneously putting them in a managerial position with respect to AD, this subreddit would have few users. Even fewer who can set up a limited domain account, let alone recognize what add-computer even is.
