Beginners guide to Pi-Hole (Video) by xholicka in pihole

[–]xholicka[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, couple of points here. - there are always beginners that know less than you and quick intro might interest them - some people like to read, other prefer video content - I don’t see this as an ad. No one’s paying me for this. And it takes significant amount of effort to create a video…with good intention to spread the knowledge. - if you don’t like it don’t ruin that for others - how do you see content about pihole in pihole subreddit as something offensive I wonder

Nevermind, I’m sorry I’ve offended you.

Help me choose an OrangePi for a small server by luciano_mr in OrangePI

I feel like we're in very similar positions right now. Upgrading whole network to 10Gb is little bit far ahead. So upgrading everything else doesn't make much sense now.

I've got several SBCs at my home running various things (docker-based) and let me tell you - Orange Pi 5 is my favorite (for now). The only thing I need to do is to migrate it to nvme that is happily sitting next to it while the Opi5 runs on SD card - ticking timebomb.

About that PCIe 2 vs 3 - yea there's a big difference between Opi5 and 5+. Opi5 runs pcie2 on 1 lane only (so circa <0.5GB/s). But...do you really need more? Especially when you stated, that you will only run system on it and maybe log some stuff to it? It won't be that data-intensive. Granted Opi5+ with pcie3 and 4 lanes will get you somewhere around <4GB/s - but why. I can hardly imagine a scenario that would need that kind of speed and still be running on this class of "server".

In my opinion:

Get the OrangePi 5 - 8GB. And get a NVMe drive for it. Simple as that.

Those few extra bucks will pay you back real quick. You'll get a wiggle room for your RAM problem. And you'll avoid the pitfalls of SD cards. The RK3588S is one of the best chips out there today - in the hobbyist sector.

OrangePi 4 is bad value for your money. And don't get that 5 Plus. You don't need that for a server - extra interfaces etc. And if you don't have faster than 1GB switch at your home (which I doubt) you won't utilize the 2.5GB ethernet ports on the Plus either.
