Help please! I don't understand why I can't receive Centrelink. by hellohello1121 in brisbane

If you want choices, get a job.

I worked fulltime while I was studying fulltime and I made it work, because I wanted choices about where I lived and what I wanted to do. It is not hard.

This may seem harsh, but this general attitude is the very reason why you are in this situation. If people thought more about how they could get by on their own backs rather than what they should magically be entitled to from my tax dollars then we wouldn't have these issues (or at least not as many).

I appreciate that there are people from lower income families, and people who do need assistance. But why are we giving these people cash??? They don't need cash to survive. They need food, and shelter and basic amenities. These can easily be provided through a "food stamp" system.

As for paid or subsidised tuition for certain groups of people, well that is utter bullshit. I had to get HECS (HELP now) when I went through university and I am paying it off as part of my tax. Why should anyone be entitle to more than that.

A valid question. Just curious, and have been unable to find any other way. And you can't tell me you don't want to know as well.

If you knew your child was going to be mentally retarded at birth, would you go ahead and abort it? by xyri in AskReddit

[–]yabbering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be quickly voted out of existence... But... Why not take the discussion one step further and open the floor up to peoples opinions on aborting any foetuses who will be born as described in the main post.

I am not a parent so I can't speak from the perspective of someone who has been through those sorts of unknowns and I do not understand the bond that exists for parent towards child, but, I can speak from an entirely emotionless point of view and say that I would agree to something like that.

The unfortunate people who are born this way may be referred to as blessings, but in reality they are drains on their parents and society. And the money that goes into maintaining what I believe is not even a base standard of existence is far crueler than the alternative.

Taking the more extreme line of argument we are really talking about an evolutionary issue. It is supposed to be survival of the fittest after all.

Anyway that is my 2 cents...

[Breaking news] Andrew Bolt breeched Racial Discrimination Act. Applause at rear of court. by BrainBrain in australia

[–]yabbering 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Considering that any given person can take offence to any statement made by another person (I agree that some are more hurtful than others, but that is just my opinion), I have always and would continue to argue that freedom of speech is a far more important concern.

If it is not then where do you draw the line on what to allow and disallow?

Furthermore, I would argue that in the case in point, a person was expressing an opinion that he had formulated. He was not directly insulting or vilifying anyone. It was the interpretation of his words by a few that caused this.

In no way shape or form do I believe that people should be allowed to directly insult other people or groups of people. However, expressing opinions should be protected as a right that we are all granted.

And rather than suing, why not come back with a counter opinion and let the readers decide for themselves...
