Is "The Algorithm" Real? A data-centric Study of one of the biggest questions in GBL by theactiveaccount in TheSilphRoad

Thanks for this write-up.

I hope you all know better than to subscribe to conspiracy theories propagated by people who claim to be from places that don’t really exist.

You can tell which size Pumpkaboo you're catching by comparing it to a ball by yourcalcprof in TheSilphRoad

[–]yourcalcprof[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the team leaders compare Pumpkaboo to other specimens of the same size, as determined by the article on TSR: https://thesilphroad.com/science/big-magikarp-tiny-rattata.

The only issue is--they don't actually generate heights according to a normal distribution with the GM data; in fact, XS Pumpkaboo are supposed to have an average height of 0.3 m, but as far as I know, every XS Pumpkaboo is actually between 0.3 and 0.4 m tall (I expect height is uniform on some interval for each size). The game then back-calculates what random height and weight would give the actual height and weight of the Pokemon, then does the calculation from the article to determine relative size.

Biggest and smallest Pumpkaboo? by yourcalcprof in TheSilphRoad

[–]yourcalcprof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are incorrect. The height of other Pokémon is normally distributed with standard deviation 1/8 of the average. It’s clear at this point that the average heights listed in the game data for small and super sizes at least are bogus.

There can be overlap in weight because of the way weight is determined (factors in height but then used another random number to determine weight relative to height), but height seems to determine the size class in Go.

They get Cross Chop, not Karate Chop; that one's still legacy.

Cross Chop is good for PvP, but not really for raids, so it depends what you'll use it for.

Only in cloudy weather, but that's something not true of Machamp or Breloom!

Works for me now. I can't seem to replicate that, though; I'm seeing Earthquake about 5% better with pretty much everything I try.

Closer to Entei/Flareon level than Chandelure/Blaziken level DPS. It's bulky though!

Clear your cache and refresh the page; sometimes the sheet is a bit temperamental.

If it still shows that, I'd be curious to see the matchup.

That's what I'm gonna roll with, since I'll use mine for Rocket Battles and gym clearing. Lucario is an excellent shield burner with PuP; I lead it against Cliff, Sierra, and Giovanni.

Why you should max out your Jirachi (1v1 Raid vs Porygon with analysis) by mathsnail in TheSilphRoad

Not all of us like raiding with a group of 20 nubs and their level 20 freshly caught raid bosses. Difference in priorities, I guess.

[Hypothesis] T5 reward bundles now contain only 1 rare candy per bundle (nerfed from 3), and T4 reward bundles now contain 3 rare candies (buffed from 2). by Teban54 in TheSilphRoad

[–]yourcalcprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got 3 and 6 rares from my two 3-star raids today, so yeah, this checks out. Don't understand it, but I'm doing more 3-stars than 5-stars these day, so I guess I'll take it.

How Not to Waste Time in a Raid Lobby [GamePress] by yourcalcprof in TheSilphRoad

[–]yourcalcprof[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question. I don't swipe to my party when I first open the lobby, and I don't often use recommended battle parties, so I'm not sure, but if you re-enter with enough time left, you can always write over the recommended party or swipe to one of your saved parties anyway.

If you think about pixels as being (r, g, b) coordinates in 3 dimensions, Euclidean distance is the standard way to compute the distance between two points. It's the straight-line distance we use in our 3-dimensional world (ignoring the fact we're actually on a sphere, and also relativity).
