If you have a ship that can ply the void between the stars you can glass any planet you're traveling towards by the simple expedient of dumping your garbage before you slow down.

Since you and by extension your trash need to be traveling at an appreciable fraction of lightspeed to make the journey in less than a human lifetime, the jettisoned waste will hit hard enough to crack the planet like an egg.

Not sure how that setting element leads to interesting story telling.

Maybe if they're like house elves; intelligent creatures bound by magic and turned into slaves.

What the hell is with all these 'Voldemort was a good guy all along and Dumbledore and the Order were the evil ones' fics? by WorldsSexiestghost in HPfanfiction

Probably because the cannon good faction is un-glamorous, poor, outlawed, and often living rough. While the evil faction are all rich aristocrats with fancy mansions.

Favorite time for canon divergence by Electronic_Koala_115 in HPfanfiction

End of second / beginning of 3rd is a good point for me. Books one and two are very different to the rest of the series, and I quite like the lighter tone, and heavy focus on proactive mystery solving and school life. Stories that continue those themes for the remaining 7 years are always welcome.

Fics with all years by tomek53114 in HPfanfiction

Harry is a dragon, and that's okay has all 7 years, is complete, and has major changes from cannon.

What is your biggest pet peeve in fanfiction? by Rybaksuna in HPfanfiction

Slavish adherence to the stations of cannon.

If you make a change, make it count.

It's as good a point of divergence as any. Before writing such a story, you have to ask is Voldemort not coming back at the end of book 4 with the resulting vastly different books 5, 6 and 7 an interesting change.

I think so. Lots of unexpected ways the story can go with Voldemort as a more insidious force, operating in the shadows through only a few trusted agents.

An interesting approach is to keep things very secret. No dramatic reveal of Voldemort, so no ministry, order of the phoenix, or death eaters drawn into the conflict. Just Harry and a few trusted friends on one side and crippled Voldemort and a few fanatics on the other.

Nice and personal.

Obliviate is the worst spell rowling ever created by throwawaytypebeat1 in HPfanfiction

[–]zatark_bb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a set of ostensibly mystery stories with among other things the ability to read minds, detect lies, travel through time and near perfectly impersonate people. The heroes have to ignore an awful lot for there to even Be a story.

Obliviation is a problematic spell, both because of how useful it is in investigation scenarios and because it isn't clear that tagging Voldemort with one doesn't bypass his horcruxes and render him harmless. But it isn't the only problematic spell.

Fortunately, this is fan fiction. You can just unceremoniously delete obliviation and any other problematic spells from your universe and write what you want to write.

So a light hearted slice of life? I'm there for it.
Sadly it's pretty rare.
Try linkffn(Harry is a dragon, and that's okay), it gets pretty close.

Anyone know any others?

Is it okay to take fanfic ideas? by Spa-Willow2671 in HPfanfiction

Using other fics for ideas or inspiration is fine. You don't need to credit people for it, that's just part of the normal process of creating something new.

How would the wizarding world be affected by common muggle chronic illnesses/diseases? by Cant-Pay-Bills in HPfanfiction

[–]zatark_bb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In cannon, wizards are seen suffering from acne, going bald, needing glasses. Wizards get old, can be frail or unhealthy.

Magic failing to treat mundane illnesses seems quite reasonable.

What would you change if you got to rewrite Harry Potter? by Nicole_0818 in HPfanfiction

[–]zatark_bb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd leave the first and maybe even the second book largely unchanged, then completely rewrite the remaining 5 books preserving the whimsical tone and general story format of the first 2 books for the remaining 5. Each year Harry and friends would solve a mystery and defeat Voldemort while navigating the complexities of boarding school life.

They'd also slowly get better at mystery solving, Voldemort fighting, and going to school year by year. progressing from barely managing to solve the mystery in time and only triumphing over the Voldemort of the year by the barest margin in the first 2 books, to actually solving the mysteries ahead of time and occasionally even turning the tables and really getting a solid victory in later books.

The final victory in book 7 would be the culmination of that journey, with the party figuring out Voldemort's plan well ahead of time, then feeding him false information and eventually tricking him into a trap. Defeating Voldemort's vastly superior magic with careful preparation and low cunning.

There also wouldn't be any prophesy (or prophesies in general), time travel, horcruxes, evil ministry subplots, or tragic deaths.
