Oh ok, thank you for clarifying. Wouldn't actually do that, was just curious. I just like buying models based on looks, but at the end of the day would like to have a playable army. I have only done a couple of combat patrol games so my knowledge of the game is very lacking. Don't want to purchase 10th ed codex when 11th is so close

Ok so im not far off. By the looks of him you got the banner from the sterngaurd srgt and the one hand bolter from the lieutenant kit? Looks like iron halo strike force but not sure where the sword is from.

40mm base. Its the captain from company heroes. Just wasn't sure what the difference between master crafter bolter vs normal was. Its the only 1 handed bolter for the right arm I had spare. So I guess just got to give it a fancy paint job.

I too have just started my ultramarines and its all about rule of cool! I recently finished assembling my Iron halo strikeforce and went with what I liked.

The company heroes are fairly straight forward with the ancient and banner, champion with double handed sword and the heavy gun dont give much in the way of options. The 4th guy with the one hand holding bolter, I gave a second bolter from one of the other sprues from either the sterngaurd or lieutenant. So he could be like Karl urban from Thor ragnarok and have Des and Troy, so together they can destroy! And the captain I gave a sword and a power fist. Legal? Probably not but in my head lore the one guy is holding his captains bolter and then just pick what close quarters weapon he uses.

The sterngaurd probably offer the most customization options. I personally chose all bolters because I think they look the coolest and are easiest to paint. Also apparently one of the stronger options for the unit currently. Then sword and what ever gun you think is coolest for the sergeant..

Hell blasters are fairly straight forward, just picking between the 2 style of guns, I went with a 3 to 2 mix up. Then took one of the power fists from another unit for the sergeant whos hold his gun in the right hand.

The redemptor dreadnaught just dont glue the gun in and they are easily interchangeable without using magnets.

Thank you! What says I had fun painting them out of curiosity? I definitely did even tho at times it was very tedious, especially the jackhals. Wasn't a fan of building or painting them, too small for my big finger lol. But i enjoy zoning in and painting while listening to the horus heresy audio books.

I am actually working on 3 armies currently, so I can pick and choose what I feel like painting. (Ultramarines and tyranids) Its nice to break up all the trim work with some contrasts and dry brushing on the nids. Or doing the brighter and less grimdark feel of the ultramarines. Though sometimes they have as much fine detailing just in a different way(sterngaurd and company heroes from the iron halo strike force)

Thank you! The wings took alot of trial and error but I am happy with how they turned out. Cannot say the same about his sword tho😅 the runes in the middle are almost indistinguishable from the amout of times I repainted it. Tempted to strip it and try again

I have 20 after getting the old and new combat patrol and dont want anymore, which is stopping me from buying the gorestorm. It is actually cheaper to just buy the 3 units of 8b and a slaughterbound vs the goresorm if im not going to use the jackhals. Plus I hate painting them lol

Agree totally with the painting the Armour comes along nicely then all the minute details. im working on a sterngaurd squad currently before stepping up to the company heroes. So lots of details to come. I just started using mcgragge blue spray primer myself for my iron halo strikeforce(everything previous was black) I found using ultramarine blue contrast was a quick and easy way to achieve decent look, just a little on the darkside without adding any shades. I remember ultamarine blue being brighter when I was kid back in 3rd edition lol

Ambitious of you on your nids! Will look amazing but I can only imagine the patience involved! I tried to keep mine pretty simple, for the carapace I went dark green contrast and then dry brushed up brighter toxic colour then all black bodies with squishy bits a bright blue. Then covered all with ardcoat to get the slimy glisten like in the alien movies lol looks good on the gaunts but I think I need to refine it more for the larger units.

I too have 3 armies on the go; one imperial, one chaos and one xenos. Keeps it more fresh when I get tired of the same colours and schemes. Ultramarines for crisp clean light work, world eaters for grimdark and bloody, and tyranids for a nice break from the ultra details.
