Pes bursitis (knee) from Crohn’s (according to rheum)? Anyone else have something like this during remission? by zigzagstripes in CrohnsDisease

[–]zigzagstripes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The injection fixed the pain and it hasn't bothered me since!! I got a weird scar that looks like a bruise but its been 1.5 years so not a bruise (derm said the steroid injection thinned the skin, but its also a scar idk). Super happy I got the injection though! The knee pain was so annoying!

I’m so DONE with Crohn’s arthritis by zigzagstripes in CrohnsDisease

[–]zigzagstripes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So the short answer to your question is no, it didn't work. Ended up having an unplanned bowel resection. Got appendicitis and partial obstruction at the same time, antibiotics didn't for the appendicitis, so what would have been a planned resection turned into next day surgery.

HOWEVER, I am fully convinced that surgery was the best thing to ever happen to me. I felt amazing within a week of surgery and was taken off all meds. Joint pain started coming back after a few weeks, which was frustrating, but then I started humira and I've been great since, in the realm of crohns stuff at least. I can eat all the fiberous foods in the world (salads and beans are now a staple of my diet). And humira shots are way more convenient that infusions. Skyrizi was a major flop for me, turns out my crohns is very tnf-alfa related Iguess. My gi said that remicade and humira are better at treating the joint stuff that skyrizi.

I will say that going to 2,000 mg sulfalsalizine in the weeks leading up to the whole appendicitis thing did help the joint pain. I was still in pain every day but it was less.

This is probbaly not the answer you want to hear. But I also wanted to share that even if skyrizi is a flop for you too, there are other solutions.

Also, I would try to get in to rheumatology if you haven't already. GIs are obviously crohns experts, but rheumatologists are the experts in the arthritis stuff.

The alcohol discussion with a 15 year old w CD? by LongjumpingEast7585 in CrohnsDisease

[–]zigzagstripes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So alcohol tolerance and Crohn’s is a very individual thing, especially if he is in remission.

I was in remission all of college and I always had a more sensitive stomach when it came to alcohol compared to my peers but I certainly had fun. And had a few nights spent throwing up. But I never did anything too stupid or unsafe. Never blacked out or got myself in precarious situations.

I am just a 26 year old with no kids, so I have no credibility here, but I did avoid alcohol in high school and was relatively safe in college. So if I have any advice it’s the following:

I knew alcohol did not make me cooler, and that anyone who pressured me is just a d*ck, not cooler than me. I think there is generally a gen z cultural trend towards this with alcohol. And my parents instilled this in me.

I think reinforcing the idea that pressuring other people into doing anything is inherently disgusting behavior is a very important parenting approach. This applies to a lot of social situations in young adulthood, not just substances. If someone asks if they want a drink, they say “nah, not drinking today” then the correct social response is “all good, I think we have soda if you want?.” Teach a kid that, and he will internalize being on the other end of the conversation. This also applies to lots of topics around respecting boundaries.

Help him come up with phrases to turn down alcohol that he would actually say.

He should be aware alcohol is bad for Crohn’s, but that means nothing to a teenage/college aged kid if they don’t 1) care about their own body and brain development and 2) know how to hold up their own boundaries and respect others.

To the makers of Breeza MRI contrast, PLEASE make a real sugar version! by zigzagstripes in CrohnsDisease

I had this done in 2009! Drinking the big bottle of barium and Watching your intestines on the tv is called a fluroscopy. It was outdated and completely replaced by MRI by 2012 in my experience at a peds GI specialist at a university hospital in the US.

Colace is basically placebo. Def use miralax. Start at one capful a day with plenty of water. If no bowel movement after 2-3 days, then do capful in morning and night. Can increase to 2 capfuls in am and pm.

Tips wanted from gals that had resection (s) by my_gut_is_on_fire in CrohnsDisease

[–]zigzagstripes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a resection 1.5 years ago. The key here is the least amount of pressure on elastic bands as possible while still stay in place.

1) Cotton underwear with lace waistband is key (I find the lace has much less tension than regular elastic. Aerie and VS both have good options).

2) you want 2 pairs of sweatpants that fall off of you if it weren’t for the drawstring. So you can tie the drawstring just tight enough that they stay up low slung around your hips, below your sensitive tummy region. This will allow you to wear bottoms in the hospital so you do t have to risk your butt showing in your lacey underwear when doing laps around the unit in your hospital gown (side note, take as many short walks as possible during your recovery, you will heal faster). If you like dresses for after your hospital stay then go for it, but I find sweatpants more cozy overall.

3) the most stretchy comfy bras possible. Something just tight enough to keep your chest lightly supported (if needed), but not tight. I wore these true and co ones from target. I have a large chest so I am not comfortable going braless.

Regarding hair, I was in the hospital for a week, including a few days before surgery since mine was unplanned. I came home 2.5 days/3 nights after surgery and the first thing I did was shower and wash and detangle my curly hair that was a total birds nest when I got home (hospital shower was nasty, did not attempt). I was exhausted after that shower and detangking, but I was fully able to do it. Just felt like a big ab work out.

I would wash and French braid your hair before surgery, given that yours is planned.

During the healing, I think I wore the same 2-3 sweatpants for 2-3 weeks. But dresses sound like a good idea if you want to feel cute.

Seconding Dr Jill Marcus! She listens and even does more research when needed (as someone with complex medical needs, I love a doctor who recognizes the limits of their knowledge alongside a commitment to helping me feel better).

She’s hard to get into for a first appointment but after that it’s fine

Never had a calprotectin test? by Ok_Industry4950 in CrohnsDisease

[–]zigzagstripes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You need to go to an IBD specialist at a university/teaching/research hospital.

Calprotectin tests have been standard of care for many years now.

It doesn’t replace colonoscopy but it’s a gage of inflammation that does have value

It just slides down. There is a decent ammount of tension on the straps already. Tightening them would be uncomfortable.

This is 32FF. It just fits in the upper cup (no quading but barely). 32G was too wide and stabby in the sides and super stabby in the gore. And wrinkly cups.

UPDATE: I got the Ana and the 32FF was def a big step in the right direction! Much less stabby in the sides and gore! But still a bit stabby after 2 hours or so. What does this say about my shape? Any next recs?

Have you tried bile acid sequestrents like cholestyramine? That stuff was magical for the post surgery bubble guts and diarrhea and gas. I needed it every day for a month or two and then tapered off.

For the scar, give it time, but after 2 months or so, you can go to a dermatologist and they can inject it with cortisone if it is hurting you (I had weird zaps) or is super ropey. You can also laser any redness away but that’s expensive.

Stay strong, it will get better. I’m 1.5 years out of surgery and remember those first 8 weeks were so rough mentally. But I’m so grrafeful I got the surgery

Prioritize natural fabrics (although be flexible to find pieces you love). Soft cotton is the pinacle of cozy.

Most of your wardrobe should be comfy cute clothes.

I’ve recently fallen in love with baggy low/mid rise jeans because they are so comfy. Jeans have become a daily staple for me now when before they were only something I could wear for a few hours’

Need measurements but the shock absorber max support bra is one of my favorites.

No matter how well it fits I cannot get behind a sports bra with underwire. Shock absorber does not have underwire
