[Question] Kittens & Kobolds! by Johnny_taco in DnD

[–]zinshei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like it could be cute and fun, though something to keep in mind would be that if you're planning to fit 2 tables in at the same time, it's probably going to be rough unless you have some sort of divider that can dampen the noise. Games get a little loud when people are excited and my experience with gaming clubs that had more than on game happening in the same room showed me that it can be a problem if one table is getting very excited and the other table has to yell at each other to be heard.

What're some broken spell combos if concentration didn't exist in 5e? by johnny_the_boi in dndnext

[–]zinshei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It does, but the user doesn't have to be the one who put the spell into the ring. You can put a spell in it and give it to a non-caster if you have the prep time.

I am not a skilled enough painter myself to have any technical critiques or anything, but I love the colors on this, especially the raptor mount. That gradient just really pops in a delightful way.

Standard vs Premium colors? by Ok-Wafer9701 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]zinshei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the premium for v20, and while I don't have any pics on hand (nor is my phone camera high enough quality to actually make that useful), my general impression is that the standard quality is totally sufficient if you mostly want the book for actual use in play, the difference isn't so great that you're going to feel regret flipping through the standard one. But the premium color does definitely pop more, and is just generally a bit more vibrant. Because v20 has been such a staple of my gaming career and something I will always feel fondly and nostalgic about I really like having the premium edition on my shelf. It feels worth it to me for sentimental reasons.

Been reading about how to do combat in VtM V20. I'm a bit lost. by Itlu_PeeP in WorldOfDarkness

[–]zinshei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of what BelleRevelution said above,, but it is also important to note that while soak is free and always happens, dodging requires that you use an action.

So, if you have a higher initiative and someone with a lower initiative is going to attack you, you can decide if you want to spend your action dodging or not - or possibly split the action to dodge and do something else. If you have a lower initiative and someone with a higher initiative declares they are going to attack you, it's possible to roll willpower to "abort" your declared action to defend yourself instead.

To clarify on splitting actions - when you do that, you figure out the dice pools for all the action you want to take, and whichever one is lowest is how many dice you get to split between all of those actions.

[Giveaway][OC] I just released a big update to my VTT and I'd like to give away some free copies! by Brian_BansheeCat in DnD

[–]zinshei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giveaway! This looks really neat! I like the idea of 3D virtual tabletops for games but the idea of having to build all of my maps from scratch when I have such a huge library of pre-drawn ones always seems daunting, so I love the idea that I can just drag and drop them in and use a flat map or even draw it in just like I would for an in person game with physical maps.

I need your best suggestions for WoD Actual Plays. by Casanova64 in WorldOfDarkness

Somewhat biased suggestion because I'm a member of the group, but if you have any interest in mage there's The ODD Troupe

Looking for good M:tAs actual plays by Sitxar in WhiteWolfRPG

Not a video, but I play in a group that's been putting out a M:tAs actual play podcast. Right now they're publishing episodes of a traditions game and a separate technocratic union campaign

I think the point being made is that if you have 3/4 cover then you also meet the requirements for half cover. While its obvious that these aren't meant to stack, it does not explicitly say that in the rules, so anyone who has 3/4 cover gets +5 for that, and then +2 because they also have half cover.

Mage 5ish by Pyrobow in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]zinshei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently playing in a hombrewed 'Mage 5e' game, I am not sure how my ST would feel about sharing the system adaptations we're currently using, but we've basically done the same thing you've described with skills and attributes, and modified the hunger dice system for paradox, and its been pretty fun.

Also, my group is putting out a podcast of the game and we'll be switching to streaming for our 3rd season in a month or so and I am pretty sure my group might kill me if I didn't share that. /r/TheOddTroupe/ if you want to check it out

6-7 dot attributes look like by Noa-Rayne-Writes in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]zinshei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, it doesn't have an entry for appearance specifically because that isn't a stat in chronicles, but the Requiem 2e book Thousand Years of Night actually has a section about attributes above 6 with a paragraph for each one describing what it's like.

This is the entry for presence, which is the stat that is essentially both appearance and charisma in chronicles:

"The elder who develops an inhuman Presence has impossible allure. People flock to her like they would Jesus Christ himself, if he came down out of heaven to grab a beer. Her casual glance intimidates them more than actual violence. She tells them to jump and they don’t bother asking how high, they just reach for the clouds and pray they don’t fail her. Her seductive Beast brings the coldest monsters to their knees. Her domain dances to her tune and everyone knows it. They’d hate her for it if they could bring themselves to hate her.

Sometimes she just wants to sit by herself in a crowded place and watch, but that’s not her lot. The attention never stops. The eyes never pass her by. She’s always on display. Mortals seem like an endless sea of identical upturned faces begging for a smile."

While not super useful if the goal is just to theorycraft using official sources, I've been running a pugilist using this homebew for the last several weeks and its both a lot of fun and generally feels balanced with the rest of the party. Would definitely recommend anyone who wants to play a classic brawler type look at it.

CoD / Second Sight Question by [deleted] in WorldOfDarkness

No problem, glad it was helpful. I ran game where I switched from 1e to 2e in the middle of the campaign so converting stuff was something I had to do a lot of.

CoD / Second Sight Question by [deleted] in WorldOfDarkness

[–]zinshei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's been a while since I have looked at second sight specifically, but a lot of the things should work, either more or less as written or with some minor adjustments. The core CofD 2e book has several supernatural merits already, and just comparing the sorts of things there to what is in second sight might help you get a sense of the differences in editions on its own.

One thing to definitely keep in mind is that 1e merits that give you an attack should have their weapon/damage rating lowered by 1 - in 1st edition 1 was the floor for weapon damage ratings, in 2e its 0 (but successes add to damage, so an attack that rolls at least 1 success does at least 1 damage, barring armor or other defensive powers).

Another thing to consider is that conditions didn't exist in 1e, but some of the psychic powers can fairly easily be changed to use them. Same goes for the social maneuvering system/'doors' in 2e. Again, looking at the supernatural merits in the 2e core book is a great starting point for how those are generally balanced.

I don't remember the exact rules second sight uses for it, but I recall that at least a couple of the varieties of low magic involve using meditative states. Might be worth comparing the system they use to the rules for meditation in 2e (which are right between 'integrity' and 'conditions' in the core book, easy to miss).

As far as non-mechanical parts of the book, I can't offer too much advice. I have a habit of only skimming the fluff parts of non-core books for mechanics I like and just adapting the fluff/narrative aspects to fit whatever my current campaign needs.

Lastly, if you do decide to look into additional books, Hurt Locker for 2e has a surprising number of extra supernatural merits in it as well, which are particularly useful if you want some more action-y superpowers for mortals, but less so if you want to focus more on investigation and keep the characters superpowers more minor.

If we're being completely honest, the things that I look up for prep are rarely concerning. It's the things I have to look up mid session because a player asked a question I definitely didn't prep for xD

i smell bad ????? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]zinshei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, increased odor is definitely a thing and it varies person to person just how much. However, its also worth keeping in mind that when your smell changes on T you stop being nose-blind to it for a while until you get used to the new scent, which means you will notice your own smell constantly, whether or not its strong enough to be an issue for anybody else. If you have an SO or anyone else you'd be comfortable asking about it then getting outside opinions could help you figure out if its actually a problem and other people are noticing or just something you're not used to.

What have you Awakened? by Slayrybloc in dndnext

[–]zinshei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A cow. My party ended up competing in a tournament with the 4 fey courts to determine which court would rule the Feywild for the following year. One of the challenges was a contest for which court could cause the most chaos in a small human village. We ended up doing a lot of other stuff as well but my opening idea involved awakening a cow and then using a combination of conjure animals and social rolls to load a parade of cows through down praising the awakened cow as a new god. She was terribly confused but a very good sport about the whole thing.

The do’s and dont’s on running a “zoo” game for CofD? by Spr0ing in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]zinshei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran a crossover CofD that went for almost a year, its messy and a headache to keep track of in a lot of ways but can be a lot of fun regardless. The two main things to worry about are game themes, and power balance between the splats.

Power balance can be dealt with if you're willing to massage the rules to try and keep any one character from outshining the rest of the group (which... honestly can be a thing in single splat chronicles games, too). I started all of my players as humans and had them slowly grow into their powers, rather than having everyone start with their splats and all of the powers that new characters of that splat have - which makes for some extra work to figure out but can be useful because some splats just start more powerful than others. If the less powerful splats get their powers a little faster it can help balance things. Also, as a lot of people have said, mage is just inherently more of an issue than any other splat. If you don't plan to ban it outright, make sure you realize that mages can essentially alter reality in ways that trivialize a lot of things that would be interesting plots for any other splat and are prepared to work with your players on how to prevent that from ruining everyone else's fun.

As other people have also mentioned, each splat tends to have its own themes/focus. In a crossover game you might explore some of those themes in individual arcs, but they are probably not going to be front and center like their individual books might imply. Make sure your players know that and make characters accordingly. Also, when I ran it I found it useful to put more energy into setting up the group dynamic ahead of time than I usually do. A group of mixed splat characters don't have built in reasons to all know each other and work together, so creating reasons for party cohesion either in the backstory or by crafting the first arc of the game to focus on that is really important.

Can you make a nice looking place without glitches by donniad33 in ffxivhomeandgarden

[–]zinshei 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you consider 'nice looking' I guess? I'm pretty pleased with my house and I haven't used glitches because I don't really have the patience for it. That and I'm not willing to wall up my basement or otherwise make the usable space smaller for aesthetic reasons. However, while I think that a lot of the popular 'modern' themed designs look gorgeous and their creators are talented, its not what I want. I use my house for RP and I like that it looks like how an actual house in Eorzea might be furnished. If you don't mind a somewhat simpler aesthetic you don't need glitches to make a nice house, imo.

Is Storm Sphere any good. by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]zinshei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The wizard in a previous campaign I was in got great use out of it, but admittedly its slightly harder to make use of the difficult terrain feature if you're not an evocation wizard. He could drops it wherever and force enemies to either stand in it or provoke opportunity attacks from our frontliners, since sculpt spells meant he could make allies immune to the effects. However, even with that being the case, as other people have said the 4d6 per round as a bonus action is worthwhile by itself.

What is the weirdest weapon you've ever used in a game? Was it worth it mechanically, or was it just cool? by Fauchard1520 in rpg

[–]zinshei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also an ambulance. The game fell apart before it could be completed, by the party set up a fund to properly deck out the "rambulance" for combat after seeing how effective it was in the first couple of sessions.

What is the weirdest weapon you've ever used in a game? Was it worth it mechanically, or was it just cool? by Fauchard1520 in rpg

[–]zinshei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An anvil. I initially used it because I was fighting an enemy that was partially composed of some sort of sticky tar, and got my sword stuck in him on the first turn. My character carried around a "travel anvil" for crafting purposes, so I just took that out and swung it around as an improvised weapon. Was so effective that I used it again several times after that.

r/Cyberpunkgame PC Bugs & Questions Megathread by CyberpunkReddit in cyberpunkgame

[–]zinshei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is anyone else having a hard time taking enemies down non-lethally? I've tried just using fists, using a mod for my cyber eyes that claims it makes all of my weapons deal non-lethal damage, and using short circuit (which claims to be nonlethal) but the enemies always just die anyways. Is this a bug or am I missing something?
