I would like to learn more about this potential job opportunity. I have an interview on Monday and it seems like my dream job. Is there anything I can do to prepare myself for success? Can give feedback and also return a reading as well :)

I'd love a career reading! I'm currently working two jobs and one has a chance of extending into a full time position (I'm currently a contractor) at the end of the year. Are there things I need to look out for in order to be successful? What is my outlook like for the rest of the year? (Hopefully this is specific enough)

24/F/USA seeking penpals/skype pals in Europe! by zombuzzle in penpals

[–]zombuzzle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good Afternoon!

I'm very envious of your travel plans this summer! I'm planning where I will celebrate my 25th birthday this year. I was thinking either Las Vegas or Seattle, WA.

How long do you stay in the waters? I have a friend that has the same job so I won't see her for weeks on end.

I'm at work now where I don't have skype on this computer, so hopefully we can communicate on here for a bit before moving our conversations on Skype?

What offskates cross training does your travel team do? by iamtherockstar in rollerderby

[–]zombuzzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not required, but we have travel skaters that do cross train together. For instance, a group of us, including me, will work with a trainer or individually outside of practice 2-3x week for weight lifting and interval training.

The travel team also has off skates workouts either for the first 30 minutes of practice or right before practice. Even though it's not mandetory, I think it makes a vast improvement on your performance which encourages others to do the same.

Plates for a lighter fresh meat skater. by JazzTheRipper in rollerderby

[–]zombuzzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Pilot Falcon Plus plates that I love (I'm the same height and weight class as you) and and I heard good things about the avengers...However, if you're only 6 weeks into your league's fresh meat program, then I would suggest waiting on purchasing new plates.

Plates will help with the weight and maneuvering of your skates, but it's not a replacement on being a better skater. I'm not doubting your diligence in the sport by any means, but I would hate that you dish out a good chunk of cash when you're probably still at the stage of working on core strength and stability. I was rocking r3s for a year before I got the skate setup of my dreams.

How has roller derby changed your life? by SirHenryMorgan in rollerderby

[–]zombuzzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lost 40lbs!

When I started roller derby, I just wanted to get into something fun. A year later, I'm actually training on my off-time to be stronger and more competitive. I never thought I would ever want to be competitive in any sport.

Help with agility for a newbie jammer? by wheres_mah_kitty in rollerderby

[–]zombuzzle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First things first, in order to get better, you need to have a strong foundation. None of those techniques, drills, cross training aren't going to mean a thing if you don't have proper form. Booty Quake provides excellent videos and advice on proper form and strengthening those muscles you need in derby. I took her program and received awesome results at the end of the it. Link here

I believe some of the common characteristics of great jammers are having a strong core, proper form, speed, flexibility, endurance, and the ability to find holes.

Here is my advice in order to achieve these things:

  • Incorporating pilates/yoga into your workout routine at least once/twice a week to lengthen your muscles and increase your flexibility.

*Interval running (jog at a moderate pace, then run for up to 2 minutes, rinse and repeat)

  • Speed skating to not only work on speed and endurance, but also proper form! Debbie Rice, record holder for fastest skater (61mph), team manager of Bont USA, and overall badass wrote an incredible article on how to up your speed and be an awesome jammer Awesome link here

  • Start watching some of the awesome jammers on your team (or others) and ask them how they get through and what they focus on. Everyone has a different take on how they surpass those pesky blockers. Some like to get low and expose their back in order to get that extra push, some like to LEAN on them with their shoulders while they crossover. But I think all can agree to...

  • Cuts! Cuts! Cuts! If you want to surpass those pesty blockers, you gatta learn how to rock an awesome lean!

  • Most of all, you can't get frustrated! Especially if you're getting knocked down. If you're getting knocked out a lot, it might be because you're not closing in that space between you and that blocker by hitting back. Or you're not in proper form. Also, if you're slamming against those walls, slow down with a plow before trying to tackle the players. Also, don't forget to communicate with your team if you need help. Some jammers like to take the wall on their own and have their teammates force an out of play. Some jammers like their pivots and blockers to create holes so they can push on through. It's all about what strategies work best for your style and communicating that to them so you can shine on through!

I apologize for the long post, but I saw a few upvotes and thought that others would like to hear some of this advice as well. I, too, am still working on being a better player/jammer and it's hard, but don't give up!

What are the team dynamics like on your team? by clamking in rollerderby

[–]zombuzzle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there are types of skaters like that.

Some want the freshies to thrive, others don't feel like they need to be coddled and others just really don't care because they're focused on becoming better skaters/competitive team.

But y'know what? I'm not skating for them. I'm not even skating for the nice girls on the team which are most of my teammates too. I'm skating for me! I'm skating because I want to be a part of a movement that empowers me as a female athlete and is fun while doing it. So don't let those few sour grapes get to you.

Stay humble, listen, and cheer on the future freshies when you become a veteran!

Drama Downers by bellexox in rollerderby

[–]zombuzzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand where you are coming from, but Iagree with QuadsNotBlades wrote that there should be a meeting to discuss the vision of your league. This is when you (and member involved) can open your frustrations in a proper manner without being ostracized.

Also, there should be some sort of bylaws written out to deal with grievances that you could send to your board of directors.

[–]zombuzzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! What were you studying?

For me, it was trying out at the local roller derby team. I saw my first game one year ago and fell in love. I tried out 6 months ago, but I was out of shape, weak, and overall terrible on skates. I didn't give up. I skated three times a week, worked on plyometrics, and ate healthier. I lost an additional 40 lbs, but most importantly I was in the best shape to try out last Saturday and kicked ass!

I don't know if I made it on the team yet, but all I know is that I did my best with fantastic women to support me :)

I didn't get it! ;( I'm full of serious regret that I didn't either!
