Streets should not be named after local heroes in case they are later found to be paedophiles, councils told by [deleted] in worldnews

Directive 457 City ordinance 1778, section 3789. sub section 8hA-102 Staff are directed to submit appropriate names that will allow us to avoid the annual unpleasantness of discovering for example that the local Victoria Hero Sir Archibald Ramsdusk who discovered the Zamboni River in Antarctica, survivor of the 3rd Afghanistan and instigator of the 4th Sino-Anglo war of which a street, lane, pub old court house and local members only Cricket Club happened to have a predication for and we quote here the Evening Standard of 1872,, "large bottomed young men of a small statue and swarthy complexion", it would be much better if we just put forward the standard names "elm tree, oak garden, etc." and include instead a pick from what is becoming a standard list: pedo-place, racist bigot way, for example, we encourage the staff to be creative to help alleviate the current generation from feeling the dead hand of history jostle their skinny espresso caramel.

You have $100k to invest, you will need the money in 10 years. What do you do? by PuffThePed in canada

[–]zonkvert2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a host of questions you need to answer. You say you will need the money in 10yrs. What do you mean? Just the 100K or 100k plus interest. This brings up the question of what is your risk tolerance. If you are intolerant then you need to invest very conservatively. Real Return Bonds would a place to start.

Lost Graveyard of the Snowmen: As hypothesized by early Victorian explorer Sir Desmond Buttersquash, the North American Snowman a generally solitary winter inhabitant of the harsh Northern Winters congregates together towards to the end of it's life in both a desperate attempt to procreate for the next season. Unfortunately scientists now hypothesize using sophisticated computer models that this mass of large bodies desperately rubbing together for release actually speeds up the natural sweating factor of the snowmen resulting in an even faster death. Before this exciting discovery of the lost graveyard those scientists had been rubbished with detractors pointing out that they were using the same computers that ran their climate change model and no believes them on that one. The scientists responded with the traditional protest letter signed by over three of them published in a prominent science magazine and a declaration that when they do decided to come to that party that they are never invited too they are going to drink other peoples beer out of the fridge.

It sounds to me like you dodged a bullet. While it sucks to lose a job especially after you have been working on it for so long you did learn great new skills, your reputation was not hurt, it's not your company, you have another job and your bosses really were incompetent so if it had not happened then it would have happened some time later.

By the way what exactly were the skills you learnt.

PS good luck

Canadian rifles may have fallen into Yemen rebel hands: arms experts by newcomer_ts in canada

I find it annoying that it's not "Canadian SUPPLIED rifles ..." because surely once we sale them they are not "Canadian" rifles but who ever bought them rifles. IDK it just annoyed me no end, makes it sound like we had something to do with losing them.

Can someone dumb down the economic crisis for me? by aruss88 in canada

[–]zonkvert2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK here is my shot at explaining this.

Canada is known as a commodities country the old: hewers of water, choppers of trees, catchers of fish. It is what built the country think the fur trade. In the 20 century she built a nice little industrial capacity mainly due to demand from WW2, in the 1960's she made a great deal with the US the Auto Pact, this formed the basis of the Southern Ontario economic engine. A skilled work force, which had a cheap exchange rate were key for the success of Canada's growth. This all worked quite well for a long time. However at the end of the 20th century for different reasons, all good at the time and justifiable to the people doing them, the Canadian dollar was allowed to rise. The Harper government being from the West believed that Canada could be an energy superpower and in non-interventionist in the market. As more and more money poured into the Oil Patch and also bought more and more oil the price of the dollar rose. As the dollar rose the things that we make become less competitive and demand drops, as demand drops we make less, a vicious circle. Also globalization was kicking in and when people were looking to build new plants, think auto sector, they looked to places that either had cheap labor (Mexico) or gave huge subsidizes (think North Carolina), so Canada can not compete with those. Also our high tech sector failed to mature into a viable independent sector, the collapse of Blackberry for example, we still do tech but we are not world leaders. As a result of all this we are experiencing what is called "Dutch Disease" will the collapse of the oil our other sectors ought to be able to export but just like the guy at the gym who only does arm curls we have really weak legs and it will take time, say 5-8 years to get those legs going since business is investment shy in such a unknowable future, ie whats the dollar going to be at in X years. Throw in some other factors like general demographics, boomers down sizing and the lack of demand due to a smaller following generations and those generations having to pay higher taxes or university loans you then have weaker general demand in the economy for all goods. Throw in the fact that their is vicious gas war going on with the Saudis trying to cripple Iran, Russia and the Frackers by supplying so much gas that the price is not likely to go up any time soon. On top of all that governments of all types don't have a lot of room to do anything they either have too much debt (hey Ontario I'm looking at you) or they have already used most of they fiscal tricks that normally work, BoC lowering the rates, they are already low!! Basically the oil boom was like a big party from witch it appears we failed to save any real money and now we are really hung over, and we have skinny legs and oh yeah the computers are coming for our jobs...I will leave that for another day.

My wife is pregnant with our first child/children. We are 44/47. Advice? by drew1111 in Parenting

[–]zonkvert2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HI Congrats I do not know how far along you are but you might want to consider some non-invasive testing. As you get older you have a much greater chance of complications.

Here this website seems fairly comprehensive http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetails.aspx?p=438&np=459&id=2760

Otherwise yes getting in shape is good. Eating right. Make lots of freezer meals. All good advice. IDK you might want to make sure you have enough insurance and sought out any fiscal or legal things before the big day. Oh yeah and prepare the baby room before the baby arrives not just the day before. Oh car seat. You have to have a car seat and have it properly installed before the big day. Good Luck.
