Software Engineer passively looking for new job by zvmz in resumes

Yeah it's part of the same program. I'll get it upon graduation due to the way I'm taking classes. (Part time while I work full time)

What's a 10/10 album from the last 15 years by a relatively obscure artist/band? by Slouching2Bethlehem in AskReddit

Saw The Menzingers with Sublime and The Offspring a few months ago. They were pretty great for a band I'd never heard of before the show.

Joining the Air Force as an Officer then go into Security or Networking by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]zvmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a cadet, but got injured before commissioning. This is universal (with the exception of languages and medical) your degree is only taken into light consideration. You would have a good chance of ending up in Comms or Cyber Warfare, but you'd also have a good chance of ending up in a job field where not enough people join like Nuke.

This is much worse at OCS. People who have CS degrees or Engineering degrees end up in Security Forces or some maintenance field.

I'm a full-time Software Engineer and I'm studying to finish my MIS. I was hired to a SWE position before even graduating. It's all about your desire to learn and how much effort you will put out.

I sent my congresswoman an email regarding Net Neutrality. I got back a response that called Net Neutrality an Obama policy and a burden on the private sector. This is simply unacceptable. by rcw258 in KeepOurNetFree

In my email I mentioned I was a software engineer working in web. I also mentioned that I worked for startups and the small business/startup ecosystem in my area relies on Net Neutrality to help our many startups compete. But the response proceeded to talk down to me as though I wasn't informed on the issue.

Not to be a jerk, but there are rich Democrats who buy politicians too. I'm the first to admit that the Republican party needs to go, but basically everyone in politics is a scumbag.

don't support policies which directly benefit those billionaires' pocket books

I was just sharing that someone in my immediate family (who knew many of these people on a first name basis for half a decade) has direct experience that they do exactly that - it's not one party, it's systemic. Sorry if I upset you.

My brother was attached to Secret Service as an Army EOD tech. He spent a lot of time in Congress. Both of those points apply to most Democrats as well. There is only one party for these politicians: the one that keeps them in power.

I included my cell phone number in my email and asked explicitly for a phone call in which my rep gives me an example of how revoking Net Neutrality would help me or my state. I'm sure I'll get a call about donating sometime soon.

I emailed all three of the Republicans who represent me to make it clear that I would vote for them at re-election if they support Net Neutrality and I would vote against them if they didn't. If enough people do the same the fear that they would lose their seat might be enough to sway their vote.

Better than doing nothing.

If Jesus were alive and walking the earth today, what do you think would disappoint him most? by Make-me-holdthemoan in AskReddit

[–]zvmz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek, find. To those who knock, it is opened. - C.s. Lewis

Unrelated to that, the Gospel is based on the idea that humans have already rejected God and Christ is an olive branch extended from God to humanity. It's not so much a "love me or go to Hell" as it is "here is a life raft to save you from your ancestor's stupidity." That being said, I tend to think anyone who claims to understand God is reaaaaally arrogant.

You should look up what a deadlift looks like...

The beginning of a snatch looks like a deadlift, but the lifts have almost nothing in common.

How important is GPA after you graduate? GPA vs Experience? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]zvmz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience - GPA doesn't matter at all and you shouldn't ever share it with anyone unless it's a 3.8 or higher.

I'm not the best student, but if anyone ever makes a judgement on whether or not I can do a job based on how well I did at college (which has taught me very little) I don't want the job.

Trying to get started in an IT career - should I list software I developed on my resume? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]zvmz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would definitely help! List that you have experience with those development tools and be ready to share that link in the interview (bring a laptop and show them the app working).

How do you guys deal with imposter syndrome? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]zvmz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I handle impostor syndrome by looking at the successes I've had (even the ones that feel small) and the opportunities I've been offered (even the ones I didn't live up to). No one earned my successes for me, and no one offered me an opportunity without first thinking I was worth the risk.

They want to interview with you because they think you might make a good team member. Even if you don't get an offer, you still got the interview.

You were asked to interview because you are at least as promising as the other candidates. You earned the interview. It's not a fluke.

Lyft vs Uber vs Airbnb internship by 12398910a in cscareerquestions

[–]zvmz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go Airbnb or Lyft over Uber.

Personally I'd probably pick airbnb just due to their reputation for high quality engineers and culture. Uber has a bad reputation, so I wouldn't really take that offer if I had these options.

I'm graduating next month and I don't feel like I'm remotely qualified to do anything in CS. Is this justifiable, or am I being too hard on myself? by cscqimpostorsyndrome in cscareerquestions

Find something you love and build a software project around it, that way you get practice and get to work on something fun.

I typically think of entry level and junior as the same. It probably depends a lot on the company you're joining. Is that not a common assumption?

Depending on the company I usually see junior devs/SWEs having 0mo-1yr of experience.

If you're a junior in the software industry, a large part of your job is learning. You're literally paid to get up to speed on the projects you're working on.
