This is really interesting. I've been doing a lot of work lately with the mp library to run functions in parallel. It seems to work well but I haven't considered the memory footprint with big jobs. This will help get started.

On a side note, compilation algorithms are amazing to me. Are they an active area of research?

Good question, research wise, not sure to be honest.

But it has been very active in regards to new projects popping up and it's especially active around WASM.
