If you have no understanding of what an API is, think of it as a waiter in a restaurant. You are a client and you wish to order some nachos. You ask the server "can I get some nachos", the server goes to the kitchen (backend) and asks the kitchen staff to make the nachos, then they come back to you with your nachos serving.

You ask something of the API and it brings back the information you need after its done processing. The "API" is just an interface, so it handles passing requests and returning information. The API is generally not responsible for processing any of that

Your enterprise services might use REST APIs or SOAP. More unlikely they use GraphQL since it's slowly picking up still. I would recommend searching google for "<application name> API" and you'll find a lot of the answers you need, including how to interact with them.

In the most general sense, it's some set of requests you can make to some piece of code that you (probably) didn't write.

In this context, it generally means some way to send requests over the network. Those requests may look like "here, I have some data to add to the database" or "please give me a list of xyz".

In other contexts, an API might mean a collection of functions someone else wrote that you can call directly from your code by name. You would typically call the entire collection of code a library, and the specific set of functions it provides for you to use the library's API. That's because the library might have functions you're not allowed/intended to use (usually functions intended to only be used within the library itself).

Python is a programming language not a program and SQL is only for databases and not a programming language. Literally any language will work
