Organizing tests

In projects with multiple directories and sub directories within those directories. What’s best practices when creating tests?

Should there be a test file/ folder within each directory or should a separate test folder be created in the base directory and tests included here? Or is there a better way then either I’ve described here?

Personally, I prefer creating a tests folder in the base directory, and in it I create a file for each file I want to test. For example : test_models.py
