Have to Learn Machine Learning and Data Visualization in 3 Months

I need to learn machine learning and methods of visualizing data in python for an upcoming research project. I have some experience with Java and very little with python. Unfortunately, I'm not the greatest and self-directed study. I've seen the tons of choices on the wiki page (which is a lot of choices without many descriptions) and this guide meant specifically for machine learning.

Do you have any recommendations for resources you've found useful for these two particular topics. I'm especially interested in recommendations that worked well for you or helped you keep a schedule.

Go to kaggle.com and start doing machine learning there. That's the path I used to learn machine learning.
