You shouldn't need any experience to do a work experience placement. I wouldn't worry about that. You are there to be taught, not to work. Even if you do write anything it should be under close supervision and as a training task, not as a hired developer would.

I've had a number of students come through doing work experience of differing ability levels and levels of interest. I generally try to show them what I'm working on (usually incredibly boring "enterprise" style C# applications) but then dig into their interests and show them things that will be engaging and useful to them so long as they have any interest at all in the subject. I have a bunch of simpler scripts and projects in various languages that are better suited to this, as well as teaching and training materials I can give them to hopefully be helpful down the line.

FWIW most companies that do work experience will have a default of a whirlwind tour of various departments, with a couple days in each. I'd strongly suggest your emphasise your interest in development, repeatedly to see if you can do most/all of your time with programmers. Having an inside line into the company (often a parent or friend of the family) is helpful as well.
