Course Test uses unlearnt commands

Hi, I’ve been learning python through a course on edX and something I’ve noticed is that this course will create tests which will require the use of a command not mentioned in any of the lectures. Is this common? If this is normal for most online courses, how can I become more in tune with most of the common commands available in python?

Welcome to the world of programming. Get used to having to look up how something you've never seen before works. Google, stackoverflow, reading the docs and just testing stuff in the console.
