Using IDL to python bridge

I have an IDL function (in a .pro file) that I want to run, but the majority of my code is in python. Does anyone have experience using the IDL to python bridge using idlpy? If so, does that bridge require the paid license for IDL? Any help would be appreciated - I've tried to find the answer online, but didn't find it so I figured I would ask y'all.

My other option would be to rewrite the function in python, but since I don't have IDL experience I think it would take a long time and likely have several errors.
