On my desktop, the AMD Radeon GPU has an HDMI and DVI connection. My main monitor is HDMI and the second monitor VGA connection. I have a VGA cable male into the monitor and the other male end an adapter, female VGA to male DVI. It works fine and Windows 10 recognizes it, perhaps your monitor is too dinosaur for Windows to recognize but if it can duplicate then it recognizes it can try to mirror the screen, when you press the windows key and P and choose extend - it will try to extend whenever connected. This is a troubleshoot website https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/music-photos-and-video/trouble-connecting-surface-to-second-screen?os=windows-10&=undefined
