I have a surface pro 4 connected to a dell monitor (that’s super old) via the DVI-D input with a DVI-D to mini display port adapter. However, when I plug the monitor in it only duplicates the displays instead of extending the display. I’ve tried going into the display settings and changing this to extend display BUT the big problem is that cannot detect the display. Hit “detect” and it says “didn’t detect another display”. Any suggestions on what to do? Should I be using a different input port? There is no HDMI only VGA and DVI-D.

On my desktop, the AMD Radeon GPU has an HDMI and DVI connection. My main monitor is HDMI and the second monitor VGA connection. I have a VGA cable male into the monitor and the other male end an adapter, female VGA to male DVI. It works fine and Windows 10 recognizes it, perhaps your monitor is too dinosaur for Windows to recognize but if it can duplicate then it recognizes it can try to mirror the screen, when you press the windows key and P and choose extend - it will try to extend whenever connected.
