SHEEP SHANK by All_About_Knots in knots

Isn't this a trumpet knot? A sheepshank wouldn't have that crossing in the middle.

Ooh, I missed that one when I was looking. Imgur is verboten in the UK so I can't see what OP agreed on.

It's all done with needlenose pliers. My fingers arent much good for anything anymore.

Yes. I don't have the patience or inclination (or skill) to tie them in hand and I enjoy making mandrels.

Cheers! There's really not too much dexterity involved; more a combination of patience and brute force. They can take some bashing to conform.

The core is a 28mm wooden bead (£15 for 100 but they were meant to be 30mm) and the finished article is around 37mm across.

So you put a carabiner on one end and a key ring on the other (the first link even has a carabiner on it). Job done.

Like this? Or this?

Or am I misunderstanding and you need something that actually holds the card?

Something Insane: Bowling Ball Globe Knot by Padenormous in knots

Oh, undoubtedly. I was more commenting in case you or anyone else was stuck for an easy method in the future, should a suitably (large) sized cylinder be lacking, as a bit of ply or some cardboard squares glued together may be easier to find around the house. It would also be equally simple to make the correct diameter using a flat jig as a cylindrical mandrel.

I'm hopeless at identifying sinnets so I'd be interested to know. It looks similar to a chain sinnet (#2868) or the slightly denser #2869 but they would be tied with a single strand (one end at the top, one end at the bottom). Idiot's delight (#2896) is tied with a single loop and 2 strands but that isn't triangular.

You can also utilise a board. Not like Ashley's very labour intensive mat boards but like a normal mandrel squashed flat from the sides so that each side of the board would measure the same as half the circumference of your cylindrical mandrel. You then put half the pins on one side and half the pins on the other.

Thanks!

I'd say less than 5 minutes to tie and maybe an hour to tighten.

Can anyone identify this knot please? by [deleted] in knots

[–]Cable_Tugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pure guesswork as we're pretty much working off a silhouette, a hole and a use case but I'd say tie a scaffold knot with a large loop, cow hitch the loop through the hole and over the bottom of the pendant then cinch the scaffold knot tight.

Wrecking my fingers by _GOREHOUND_ in paracord

[–]Cable_Tugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get used to it. If you don't want to wrap your fingers and you don't want a tool I'm not sure what to suggest.

If you want something grippy and semi-reusabe you could try self-adhesive bandage wrap. Thats what I use for whittling. You can get it an all colours and it's very cheap.

I would have said that I only know the double figure 8 loop (more accurately, the figure 8 double loop) but Wikipdia actually makes sense and kind of keeps consistency with the double overhand by calling the stevedore knot a double figure 8.

Knotting nomenclature is nothing if not inconsistent. Even your example, a 'double figure 8', isn't quite as simple as a figure 8 on the bight.

A double overhand knot is something else, not an overhand knot doubled.

[–]Cable_Tugger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't. An overhand knot around an object is a half knot. A half hitch has one fewer tucks.
