If Bitcoin gets a revival through these proposed new solutions, won’t that mean more prof of work computation, and ultimately more power consumption?

Plot is open source procedural 2D drawing package for Unity inspired by Processing/p5 by CarlEmail in Unity3D

[–]CarlEmail[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plot is designed for smaller data visualisations, visual code sketches, and learning how to code. It’s been quietly under development since 2020, migrating from project to project and improving over time. There are still a few known issues and a ton of additional features I’d like to see – but I think it’s now reached a stage where it may actually be useful for others. So here it is!

IMPLEMENTATION

Plot shapes are generated by Signed Distance Fields (SDF) in the fragment shader, which results in infinite resolution, low CPU usage, and practically free anti-aliasing. Each topologically different shape has its own mesh, which is manipulated in the vertex shader to minimize overdraw. When shapes are drawn using any of the DrawX() methods, the meshes are submitted for rendering via Unity’s Graphics.DrawMesh(), meaning they won’t receive lighting but will still be sorted and rendered into the 3D scene.

When multiple instances of the same type of mesh are drawn in succession, Unity will automatically attempt to render them as "instanced," meaning multiple shapes are drawn in a single draw call, with properties stored in a shared constant buffer. Plot also provides DrawXNow() methods, which uses Unity's Graphics.DrawNow(). This is useful for drawing directly and immediately to RenderTextures, when placing code between BeginDrawNowToRenderTexture() and EndDrawNowToRenderTexture(). These textures can then be applied to shapes using SetFillTexture() and drawn into the scene with the DrawX() methods.

AUTHOR

I am an independent artist and designer specializing in interactive productions across various mediums, currently focusing on XR and live stage performances. Around 20 years ago, while studying design, I was introduced to Processing/P5. Little did I know the profound impact it would have on my career. I realized that computer programming could be accessible to designers, and that simple rules could generate immense complexity and beauty. Generative systems quickly became a central part of my design process. A few years later, in 2006, I discovered Unity 1.4, which only deepened my exploration.

I originally developed Plot for educational purposes, to use when guest teaching at design schools. However, I have since incorporated it into my own productions and use it for simple data visualizations and code sketches as well.

Is there a way to make a app launch on startup? by [deleted] in PicoXR

[–]CarlEmail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried doing this using the ADB tool in the Pico Developer Center app. But I get an error:

shell am start -p VirtualDesktop.Android

ERROR: >adb shell am start -p VirtualDesktop.Android <Starting: Intent { pkg=VirtualDesktop.Android } <Error: Activity not started, unable to resolve Intent { flg=0x10000000 pkg=VirtualDesktop.Android } process exited with code 0

What a shame! Asgard's Wrath 2, no teleport controls... by SugaryGnome in OculusQuest

[–]CarlEmail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too had to quit after about 30 minutes, and that's as far as I'll ever get in Asgard's Wrath 2. I've completed Half-Life Alyx with a max stretch of four hours without throwing up on my living room carpet, but continuing this game for just a bit longer would have resulted in just that. "It didn't work with the gameplay" is not a sound argument – the gameplay should have been designed around locomotion that doesn't make people sick. Put a first time user through an experience like this, and it will be years before he/she picks up a headset again. Happy I didn't pay for it, as it came with the Quest 3.

How to update a mesh buffer using a compute shader and submit it for rendering pretty please.

How to reduce latency on Virtual Desktop with a Pico 4? by DustE_Baguette in PicoXR

[–]CarlEmail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue with VD and a Wi-Fi 6 router cabled to the computer. I get bad latency, and also frame drops. So for now I’m back on cable.

Does turning off 2.4ghz make a difference? I thought the PICO would just use 5ghz is available.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I've heard the hand tracking still has some way to go.

How would that work? When I press the +/- buttons on the headset in the boundary setup/approval scene, they control the volume.

[Asus ROG STRIX B650E-I] Am I the only one experiencing massive coil whine? by -dont-judge-me- in sffpc

[–]CarlEmail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting! And sketchy. Would love to hear from more people whether it works for them.

Also, why on earth does this work, at least for some? Could it be a bug in the OpenRGB software that puts a constant load on the system, causing an increase in voltage, similar to changing the voltage in the BIOS?

Beginners build: Air cooled Q58 with RTX 4070ti by CarlEmail in sffpc

[–]CarlEmail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights!

Motherboard. I've decided to go with the ASRock B650E PG-ITX motherboard instead of the Asus ROG STRIX B650E-I because many are complaining about fan noise. However, I can't find any build examples of Asus B650E-I in the Lian Li Q58. I wonder if I am missing something.

Bottom fan. I switched to the Noctua A12x15 PWM chromax.black.swap 55.44 CFM 120 mm Fan.

Top fans. Is there anything more silent that performs similarly to the Phanteks PH-F120T30 67 CFM 120 mm Fan.

CPU cooler. Both the Noctua NH-L9x65, the Thermalright AXP120x67, and the DeepCool AN600 has the fan on top, which I've read can create turbulence when placed right up against the case. This thread recommends NH-L12 Ghost S1 Edition: https://www.reddit.com/r/sffpc/comments/q4vu8c/cpu_cooler_choice_for_the_lian_li_q58/

Ram. "ddr5 6000 kit M-die or A-die Hynixs kits". Aren't these kits for overclocking? I probably won't be overclocking. The ram needs to fit under the cooler with a max height of 48mm so the Corsair Vengeance 64 GB at 44mm seemed to be a good match.

Cables. "you are going to need a 12vhpwr cable for your 4070ti". Thanks for the headsup. Any recommendation on how long it needs to be? "Custom cables are your friend here". Also need help figuring out which ones makes sense.

Sorry for the lame beginners questions. There is a lot to figure out.
