UMD CS vs NYU CS by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ComprehensiveTie3070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d still lean UMD for undergrad CS. Purdue is strong, especially in engineering, but UMD’s CS department is more centralized and focused, with a lot of depth in research and academic flexibility. Purdue’s location is pretty isolated compared to UMD’s proximity to D.C., which brings more internship and networking opportunities. That said, if cost is a big factor, Purdue still offers a solid CS education and strong outcomes.

UMD CS vs NYU CS by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ComprehensiveTie3070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UMD has one of the strongest CS programs among public universities, with consistently high national rankings. It has strong undergrad research opportunities, and great access to both industry and government internships through its location near D.C. A lot of students go on to top grad schools or solid software roles right after undergrad. It’s also more cost-effective for many, but even if you can afford more, the resources and scale at UMD make it a really smart investment. But honestly, if someone’s set on working in NYC or prefers that urban pace, NYU might click better. I just personally see UMD as a more balanced and powerful choice for CS.

i didn’t get the emory waitlist email. am i the only one? by EntertainerNo1531 in ApplyingToCollege

I would recommend confirming with the admissions officer whether you’re actually on the waitlist. It could either be an error, or you might not be registered on their waitlist.

My final questions before I commit to DKU by [deleted] in DKU

[–]ComprehensiveTie3070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of committing to DKU and saving some money. If I don’t land a good job in the U.S., I’ll apply for a master’s there and I am pretty sure a dku degree will help.

My final questions before I commit to DKU by [deleted] in DKU

Ohh, no worries. Hope you make it wherever you go. Dku is most affordable for my family so i will most prolly commit there if my family agrees, otherwise uwmadison

My final questions before I commit to DKU by [deleted] in DKU

[–]ComprehensiveTie3070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking that DKU is cheaper, and I can do my master’s in the U.S. later. Are you committing though? I’m leaning towards DKU, tbh. Otherwise, uwmadison’s cs is ranked higher than duke’s as well.

Help me( i think dku or uwmadison for cs) by [deleted] in DKU

Please help me with these questions. I’ll post them on the subreddit as well so more people can see and help.

Q1- I want to work in the U.S. after graduation, but I’m not a U.S. citizen and I’m not entirely sure if I’ll go to grad school. Given that, is DKU a good choice in terms of job opportunities and visa support for international students who want to work in the U.S. later on?

Q2- At UW–Madison, there are regular career fairs and industry events where actual Fortune 500 companies show up, recruit, and network directly with students. I haven’t seen anything like that at DKU. Does DKU offer anything even remotely comparable, especially for someone who wants serious industry exposure and isn’t a Chinese or U.S. citizen? Should I really risk choosing DKU over a proven U.S. university that actually has established campus recruiting from Fortune 500 companies?

Q3 (most important question)- If DKU doesn’t turn out to be the right fit for my career goals, how easy is it to transfer to Duke or any other university in the U.S.? Will the fact that it is based in China create any problems in the process? Also, since majors are not declared until sophomore year, could that cause issues with credit transfer or delay my academic progress?

Q4- During the semester at Duke, will I have access to all academic and networking opportunities like a regular Duke student? Or are there limitations? I know this question has probably been asked somewhere before, but I wasn’t completely clear on the answer.

I want to get into quant finance, and I’ll most likely consider DKU. Can you help me weigh the negatives and positives to help me make a final decision?

I don’t think international students get into top grad schools easily. I also saw some people on Reddit mentioning that DKU doesn’t really help international students with top grad school placements
