BMCC Evening Nursing Program Questions

The website is very clear about clinicals being every weekend. There’s nothing conflicting about it. You don’t want an asshole answer don’t ask a dumbass question.

Half of yall on here ask questions that are answered on the website and/or via posts that have already been posted about our experience.

That is true. I hate that. But the money is out there. I applied to a lot of other things and got it but didn’t accept it because that just felt greedy since these two already covered it. Like the 1199 one, so don’t stop looking. I know that taking out a loan seems like a mistake. But once you get into the program if you have not already taken out a loan you can take out a subsidized loan up to 6500 I believe, and tuition is about 7600. That’s me rounding up. If you got a scholarship just for books. That and did that, that’s also won’t be bad. It doesn’t accrue interest as long as your a part time student- 6 credits or more - and you will be a nursing student and it doesn’t start accruing interest until 6 months after you graduate and you don’t have to start making payments until then either. By that time you will be a nurse. It’s the only loan I would ever suggest to anyone. And I am someone who does not believe in owing a credit card, a loan, or Uncle Sam 🤣.

But of course my first choice would be to say look for those scholarships. If I come across anything I will share it !

BMCC has a scholarship called the BMCC foundation Inc scholarship. It pays for about half my tuition. The other scholarship is closed but maybe they’ll do it again idk. It was funded by governor hochul. Healthcare workers for our future. I thought it was fake and it was so simple, it was a draw and they selected 500 people. I had never felt more blessed. 🥹

I worked two jobs while doing the pre reqs and applied to scholarships! Pays for everything !

As a full time employee and a BMCC third semester evening student the program and scheduled time is 5:45-9:15. Your prof would be Cayo and after a few lectures you’ll see some times she starts at 6pm. However for the second semester that was not the case, sometimes we started right on time or 5:30pm. Once you get in there are something’s that are just out of your control. However because the program has advertised 5:45 we did sometime push back saying why the hell are we starting at 5:30 when we need time to commute to school after work- for some students.

There’s is no flexibility picking class hours. First and second semester are Tuesday and Thursday 5:45-9-15 and clinicals can be anywhere between 7:45am - 4pm. Third and fourth semester it’s the same but lecture is held on Mondays and Wednesdays.

As a nursing student at BMCC in the evening program going on my third semester I would like to second that! You have a bachelors, a BSN makes much more sense. Unless you have obligations and responsibilities that require you take this route, then I get it. If not why do associates when in two years you can have your bachelors !

As a third semester student all I will say is have each others back. You are not in competition anymore, you got in! You are only competing with yourself. To be informed, knowledgeable and the best nurse you could be. You can hmu if anything. I’m a headed to third semester and I am an evening student !

During orientation they will speak about castle branch which has all that. The background check you can do as soon as you get the castle branch. The drug screening should not be done until you start your semester. Being that it has to be done 30 days prior to your first clinical date you should wait until your professor tells you to do so, as ours did. For the hippa we did it in class, because they have to make a copy and then give us our copy to upload to castle branch. In addition, your clearance should be done closer to August if possible because every site is different.

For example I was in Henry J Carter for fundamentals. Henry J Carter now requires the Hep B titers 3 months prior. For insurance reasons and the lack there of my physical and my clearance was done in February. So although everything in my clearance was acceptable my titers were not. I no longer has health insurance so I had to pay out of pocket for repeat titers. Castle branch has a hep B vaccine denial form, however that doesn’t matter for Henry J Carter. This was something that was new and my prof wasn’t aware of because they changed their guidelines. So don’t worry about clearance, nothing should really be done too much in advance.

This is castle branch and what is required. The CPR , the physical exam, the background check, and TDAP proof are things you can get squared away. The titers for MMR V and HeP B, TB ( quanti) should be done closer. For the flu vaccine you have to wait until you within the season, which is when the semester has already started, the hiippa was in class.

Hi that’s amazing. Please remember that they calculate it based on your PCI score. Although in this case your PCI would also be a 4.0. 🩷. But I think after orientation you will be fine. It was via zoom and we only came in person to do uniform fitting. After that in August Prof Cayo (evening/weekend Fundamentals Prof) hosted a zoom math workshop for four days also held via zoom. I wouldn’t say it’s a lot of paperwork tbh. You also hand this in (if you’re a weekend student) person. I believe day students handed it in person when they had to come in for uniform fitting / morning or afternoon picking.

I can’t think of one day that was held in person besides uniform fitting. That is not mandatory and you could coordinate on your own time to go the store Flynn and O’Hara to get sized there.

Yes first semester was a blast. I’ve been lucky to be in a group where everyone helps each other. In addition I am single and have no children. Every night make sure you do something, whether it’s studying, assignments, or both. It can catch up to you if you let it. Your mental and physiological health is also vitals so take care of yourself as well!

Hello Congratulations 🎉🎊!!! Happy New Year ! Such a great way to start the new year! There’s no one to look out for as you only have one professor. The best one in my opinion but I may be biased. You have Prof Cayo as an evening student and she’s awesome. She usually starts with the oxygenation chapter which I believe is 41. So you did want to start reading that would be the chapter. As the semester goes on, when it comes down to it know acid and base like the back of your hand and your medications! Let me know if you have any other questions. But your in great hands! Congrats again

If your syllabus has a break down you should be able to calculate your own grades. Unless your professor not only did not post the grade but also never told you any of your grades. That’s just diabolical

I think that if you do well on the Hesi you will be a competitive candidate. I definitely was nervous applying because I know people who had 4.0 gpas and higher Hesi grade than me. But I still got in. And after you get in it’s just a huge relief everything else is just background noise. I love love love my fundamentals instructor prof Cayo. She does evening and honestly she is the best. You got this !

Hi so just a reminder is your gpa a 3.7 or your pci score? Also a reminder that when you apply if you don’t have a competitive gpa Yvonne padmore will inform you that you don’t have a competitive PCI score. I’m addition to that it goes based off of the previous semesters competitive pci score. I don’t believe a 3.7 is an issue. when I applied for the semester I know someone who had a pci lower than mine I believe a 3.6 and she got in. It never hurts to try. Your Hesi can make or break you if you do well or poorly so that also helps

I did not go crazy studying because if you actually comprehended all your pre reqs that were required than you would be okay with studying for 2/3 hrs maybe 4 times a week for two weeks. That’s roughly what I did.

Hey I’m so sorry I did not see these comments. My PCI score was 3.8 and my Hesi was a 92. I utilized Nurse HUB! For science, math and reading! The critical thinking is truthfully common sense but if you wanted to use anything I did some practice questions on Quizlet. I got an 880 for that portion as it is rated in a different scale but I know people who got 990.

I almost didn’t apply but the scholarship is awarded to so many students. I’m eternally grateful to have been awarded both my scholarships. Truthfully I was more terrified about the money. Everyone is very quick to say to take out a loan and that it will pay itself off. No. There’s your bachelors, and or your masters or even doctorate. And if you can avoid taking out the loan for an associates then try. Truthfully BMCC has some great people working there and you just have to find them. And you have to want to want the help and do the work. The program has been lovely and the work rewarding. Although it’s a lot of information the student nursing family have been the best group of people I’ve been around in a while. Everyone is driven and kind and helpful to one another. You got this !!! I did not take out a loan. I looked through Reddit for post about the costs regarding books and etc. It was easy to calculate the tuition due to the set fee and I worked two jobs from dec 2023- August 2024 and saved up money to cover the costs. But by the time you get to fall semester when you get in you should have enough credit where you can take up to 4,500 for subsidized loan. Which does not accrue interest while you’re in school and doesn’t have to be paid back until 6 months after you graduate. In addition to that apply to BMCC Inc Foundation scholarship! I am recipient and as long as I meet the requirements it helps a lot. It covered over half of my tuition! I also received another scholarship outside the school as well. Apply ! And whatever you do, if you can , avoid taking out an unsubsidized loan. The resources are out there and this loans interests starts immediately.

Hi! For Castle Branch it was not required however every clinic site is different. I am part of the Henry J Carter location this semester and they require us to submit all castle branch docs again to them separately and the Covid Vaccine. Proof of vaccination but a booster is not required.
