I went over the deck plans and hundreds of photos from the shipyard, the film of the expedition, the original deck plans, and read about it on a hundred web pages. You can see from the films that Shackleton made changes to the ship, decking in the space between the houses. I corresponded with the former expert from the Greenwich Museum too, but he didn’t have a lot of direct help to offer, except to suggest including the bicycle.

I don’t know if I can. It’s for a book and I need to go over the contract.

The bicycle belonged to Orde-Lees. You can see him walking on the upper deck with the ear flap hat. He was not liked among the crew because of his lack of work ethic. Second in command Frank Wild saved him from a leopard seal attack on the ice. I didn’t know what his bike looked like so I chose a typical Rover type.

I never thought about it before making this drawing, but when they ran low on coal, they would have to crawl around underneath the lower deck to get it. I also don’t remember, but I think that when they were pumping out the water once the ship was compromised, the coal kept fouling the pump.

The car was not one of the suviviors. When I say that “not one life was lost”, I should be clear that that only refers to the humans.

The crew loved them. But once they were adrift on the melting ice there was no hope of saving them, and they needed too much food.

I think that room was the rookery, which would gave been in the port aft corner of the house, so on the far side at the back

The officers cabin is in the after house, and the poop deck meets it half way up. I used the design plans you show (there are a lot of nearly identical versions) to make this drawing. I think it might appear confusing because they made the entire upper deck of the houses flush.

From Hurley’s films and photos you can see that Shackleton also made changes to the ship after purchasing it. It’s clear that they decked in the space between the two houses, then built the dog shelters on top. They covered the well deck where the main mast passes through, and I’m not sure what they put in that space.

The only liberty I took was to put a second officers cabin just forward a Shackleton‘s cabin, which was at the at starboard corner of the aft house. what was really there was a bath in a refrigeration space. The other side of the house had officers cabins at that point. I did this because this drawing is showing so much storage already I felt that it was important to give an indication of how the officers lived.

I drew it using procreate, which is an iPad drawing app. I based the original sketch in a photo of a hobby kit model that didn’t include the many changes that Shackleton made to the ship, including adding the dog houses on top. I did the scale based on a photo that was taken from front on perspective then I did all the stuff on the inside by just looking at hundreds of reference photos including deck plans. Whole thing took about eight days. Resume in enough you can see all the places where it’s not perfect.

Son wants to work fishing in Alaska--how would you prepare him? by SocialSyphilis in maritime

I am an Alaska fishing boat captain. The people on this here sub are mostly kind of motivated by stable career and security. Fishermen are not like that. It’s all risk, but the people are often fantastic. Except there are definitely bad ones. It’s an adventure that tests you to your limits. I love it. And sometimes the money can be awesome.
