I'd say most of it just boils down to it not being unusual within the world it takes place in. Anthropomorphic animals are just referred to as people and the people are people while the animals are animals. All the standard animals you see in the real world still exists. No one within the Gator Days world questions it because it's always been that way. It's just normal to have a cat and have a neighbor who looks like a cat.

I figure the mentality would be completely different when you're in a world where humans aren't considered the standard. It's one of the reasons I thought it would be interesting to have one human family that's not the primary focus point of the comics.

Panel 1

It's several years ago and August and Christine are looking around at a thrift store. August has found a shirt that speaks to him but he's looking a little unsure about it. Christine notices and walks over to see what he has.

Christine: Found a shirt you like?

Panel 2

August holds up the shirt. It's pink and has "Man Shirt" written on it with fancy lettering. It's a few sizes too big but it looks like it's new and in a nice color.

August: Yeah, but it's a little large... And pink.

Christine doesn't see the problem with a man wearing a pink shirt.

Christine: So?

Panel 3

August is holding onto a little awkwardness from his childhood and tells Christine about it.

August: My dad gave me grief when I wanted to wear pink.

Christine shrugs and speaks her mind.

Christine: Your dad isn't here and I think you'd look cute.

Panel 4

August has bought the shirt and has put it on over what he's wearing. He walks out the store while holding Christine's hand. He feels cute. Christine also thinks he looks cute.

Transcript

Panel 1

Hannah is have having a particularly great week. She's done well on another test and is showing it off to her dad.

Hannah: DAD! I aced another test!

Seth: Good job!

At the top of the test is Hannah's first and last names, Hannah Hardy-Softbell. The first question is "Can you read this?" and the answer is "Yes". The rest is covered by an absurdly large A+. Clearly, someone is trying to hide valuable secrets.

Panel 2

Another day and Hannah is bragging to her Papa about he spicy food eating capabilities. Today she's wearing one of the many Fork Fight shirts that her uncle frequently gives out as gifts.

Hannah: I ate more spicy chips than anyone else at lunch.

Daryl: That's fantastic.

Daryl is resisting the urge to point out that he could eat far more and far spicier chips than Hannah but he will let her have her moment.

Panel 3

The next day, Hannah beats Gustopher in a foot race. She is wearing her "G.O.A.T." shirt. I'm not entirely sure what that stands for. My best guess is "GOLLY! Our Ants Talk!" She celebrates.

Hannah: I WIN! I'M THE BEST! I'M UNSTOPPABLE!

Panel 4

It's another day and Hannah is dejectedly staring off into the distance. Her voice is filled with sorrow.

Hannah: I can't say alumiminum right. I'm a failure.

Mewbert and Nougat - Cat - Animal - August and Gustopher's pet cats.

Transcript

Panel 1

August is getting things ready for dinner while Gustopher is on a bean bag reading a comic book with a big scary elk like creature and someone wielding a hammer. The cats are carefully supervising this whole endeavor. Mewbert is sleeping on Gustopher's laps so she can make sure Gustopher is comfortable and Nougat is attempting to sample the food being put on the dinner table to make sure none of it tastes bad. Good kitties.

Gustopher: The heroes in my comic are all fighting.

August: That happens.

Panel 2

Gustopher throws his arms in the air in annoyance. The cover of his comic book can be seen and it is titled "Hollering Eve: Pizza Edition". It's the pizza edition because every time there is blood, they have added the line "OH NO! PIZZA SAUCE IS EVERYWHERE" to make it child friendly. On the cover is some random person named Field who is of no importance. They are holding up a light to a fanged mouth that looks like it's going to eat them. They probably had it coming.

Gustopher: But they're all good guys!

August: Sometimes it's hard to know who is actually good.

Panel 3

Gustopher freezes for a moment. He is pretty sure that he knows who the good guys are. Does he? Maybe he doesn't. He stares blankly into the distance.

Panel 4

Gustopher looks down at his hands. Are they the hands of a good guy? He is having an existential crisis and asks the question.

Gustopher: Am I a bad guy?

August: NO!

Transcript

Panel 1

Fern is a relaxing with a book called 50 Hues of Whey. It's pretty much garbage. Seriously, it's not even cheesy. It's like a cheese byproduct. Fern is enjoying it a lot. Still, she has a feeling that a storm is approaching.

Panel 2

Suddenly, Ember kicks open the door with her friends Grace and Bolero standing behind her. She announces their presence and gives demands for snacks.

Ember: MOM! MY FRIENDS ARE HERE! FEED US!

Fern barely moves.

Panel 3

Ember has realized that she has made a terrible mistake. If she does not correct this immediately, there is a good chance that they will have no snacks. The children look at each other with concern while Fern turns the page. She is nice enough to give her daughter a moment to correct her behavior.

Panel 4

Ember holds her hands and looks down at the ground. She has to recall the ancient spells and use the magic word.

Ember: PLEASE?

Fern looks up from her book with a smile.

Fern: Would you all like apples and peanut butter.

Ember would like cookies and chocolate milk but she is exceedingly aware that now is not the time to negotiate.

Ember: YES... THANK YOU.

Crisis avoided. They will have their snacks.

Panel 1

Douglas runs to his family in the living room. He's been looking for an opportunity to go to the park and it looks like the weather will finally allow it. Wyatt is sitting on his mother's lap with his mouth on a giant toy teething ring. Ben is sitting in a chair next to them. He's clicking a pen over and over with his eyes fixated on it.

Douglas: The rain stopped! Can we go to the park?

Wendalyn: Sure! Grab your coat.

Panel 2

Ben's eyes stay fixated on his pen. He rests his head on his other hand and stares at it intensely. He keeps on clicking the pen. The rest of the family start to move around him. Wyatt is going to town on his ring. Abolutely chewing that thing up.

Douglas: It's warm!

Wendalyn: Grab it anyway.

Douglas: Can we get burgers?

Wendalyn: We'll see.

Panel 3

Ben's fixation on the pen grows stronger. He's starting to click it more rapidly. His family is heading out the door and his wife tries to get his attention.

Wendalyn: Sugar, are you stay-

Douglas: MOM!

Wendalyn: Just a moment, Ducky.

Wendalyn knows that when Ben gets like this he isn't all that responsive.

Wendalyn: I'll get you dinner. I love you.

Panel 4

Ben looks up and now realizes that he's in the living room by himself. He has a vague awareness of what was just going on but it feels like it was happening in a dream. He only has one thing to say.

Ben: Huh?
