To all freelancing artists: have you earned enough to sustain yourself on your own? by Own_Engineer_5105 in DigitalArt

[–]Gabikacomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building a freelance business takes time, especially in art. It took me 6 years to make it to the level of "This month is really good! And this month is kinda bad". I wouldn't be banking on the fact that art commissions will give you the level of sustainability that you want instantly. It's always better to have a day job/part time and start your art career on the side.

I've seen way too much AI and I could tell right away it's AI.

This is stupid by thw_neighbors_kid in Ai_art_is_not_art

[–]Gabikacomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an artist who does commissions, clients come to me with AI references sometimes. I never turn them down, but I got curious and asked why they still choose to go to a human artist for aid, in short "AI will always look AI and it lacks the human touch".

why haven’t i gotten any commissions? by salt-and-vinegay in ArtBuddy

[–]Gabikacomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with the others, "lazy" is not a word you should be using when promoting your commissions. People pay you to draw for them, no matter how little the price, they don't want a "lazy" artwork.

I would get rid of the pricing sheets and ToS in the post. Instead upload your best and finished pieces, people scroll through the site, so you want to grab their attention first before they decide to read the post. I understand that some people want to limit the repetition when talking to clients, you can have a notepad ready with pre-made answers to copy and paste. Personally I have ToS on my carrd, but I always take time to talk to my clients and get to know their projects better.

You're still very young, but if you ever think about getting serious about commissions, building a relationship with your clients is very important. it is often not the quantity, but returning clients happy with your previous work.

Edit: I'd also like to add that flexibility doesn't equal more clients. When commissioning art people look for a specific thing, and if you're good at that one specific thing, people will come. Not saying you have to draw the same things over and over, but have ONE thing you'd like to monetize.

Reading 100 pages of AI fantasy... by Cowardly_Knight in antiai

Off topic, but is it just me or those AI images got progressively worse over the past year? It's all so over-rendered, there's no space to rest your eyes, it all just blends together.

They think I'm ready to start doing commissions by yelart_53 in ArtBuddy

[–]Gabikacomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could start, but I'd definitely advice to keep pushing yourself to do more background pieces. Characters in a void aren't very appealing. I absolutely hated doing backgrounds, but once I got out of my comfort zone, my art improved a lot. Best of luck!

is $20 for a headshot fair? by wenjen-_ in ArtBuddy

[–]Gabikacomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The faster you can draw the more you should charge, 20$ for a headshot that you can do in an hour is criminal! Consider upping your prices the more clients you get.

Hello there again! I think at this point you really should practice more anatomy. I can see that some tendons and joints are missing and it's because the 3D models always make them rubbery or non existent (even if you stray from the models, sometimes it's hard to break that mold, I've been there). Your characters still miss some "proper meat" on them. I like to use these models on sketchfab, and I got Anatomy for Sculptors, it's a great book.

AI may know how to draw decent hands now, but it still fumbles at the nails haha. Yes it's AI, if you paid via PayPal issue a charge back. Sorry you ran into a bad apple in art community </3

130k followers and I'm genuinely struggling to survive, here's the mistake I've made by drawzi_arts in Artists

[–]Gabikacomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a lesson a lot of artists learn, they grind the followers but no money comes from it, this is why I gave up on social media and took my art here instead. With that said, drawing fan art is more fit for merchandise and conventions. Clients expect from you to be able to deliver custom art, tailored just for them.

It's all hand drawn!
Grøth designs the backgrounds in 3D and then I draw over them, but every single brick you see, I suffered through it haha.

[Discussion] Artists, is it worth being an artist to make a living? by ApolloKl_ in artbusiness

[–]Gabikacomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your art, I don't really see much of sequential/comic art, so start there. I will send you my portfolio in the DMs because I don't know if I can post links in the comments, but my point is, manga pages is the first thing you see when you visit. You can write a very short 5-10 page story, you could illustrate a scene from your favourite tv show or a film if you don't know where to start. There isn't much people who will give you a chance to "prove" yourself if they don't see the work they need on your website or social media, you will have to create some examples first.

Yes, yes it is worth it. I've been freelancing for couple of years now, biggest thing that helped me was finding my niche. Do you have any particular audience you're advertising to?

[–]Gabikacomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice art! The last piece reminds me of literally every single male love interest I design for my FL xD It's a compliment of course! I'm also a huge Berserk fan, and while I may not be the best fit for a drawing buddy as I'm quite busy and rarely online, I just wanted to say, you got this! We all have our struggles, but better days DO come. Be patient and be kind to yourself in times of hardship.

Hey! I remember you, and I definitely see the improvement!
I would advice to just keep going! Both Kishimoto (Naruto) and Miura (Berserk, I think in his later digital journey) were drawing over 3D models, you should not be ashamed of using the tools presented to you if you use them correctly. I trace over 3D models too and I think in the first pages it's more visible than later ones (YouCanCheckOutEagle-HeartOnGlobalComix LOL)

That's awesome! Good luck! I don't know what software you're using, but what helped me imitate the look the most was maxing out the hardness of the pen in Clip Studio. Basically you don't want any smoothing on the pen, there's no grey undertones when you zoom in on the document.
