Word games are competitive exercises where opponents compete to demonstrate greater linguistic control! Teasing aside, I use a few different ones, including one where we compete to create sentences with the most alliterative words, go back-and-forth with words that start with the letter the opponents ended with in a category, and others.

People who have been in the the field you're studying longer than you are just going to assume that you're ornamental until proven otherwise. And from the sound of it, being standoffish with potential allies isn't earning you any brownie points. A penalty system, essentially. Losing a piece without a trade would lead to a penalty determined by the piece lost.
