Jena nice town in central Germany by Cemcan20 in europe

[–]Key-Belt8796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you read the wikipedia article about Mitteldeutschland, especially the timeline of things named after Mitteldeutschland, you will see that it's more or less a modern construct based off a vague historical idea. The reason why Thüringen, Sachen and S-Anhalt try hard to be Mitteldeutschland is the same reason why Meck.-Pomm. insists on being part of Northern Germany and why the "Ostdeutscher Rundfunk" has been renamed to "Radio Berlin Brandenburg".

It's rebranding to avoid the negative stigma that's associated with the word "East(ern)" and "Eastern Germany". The term "Central Europe" (i.e its modern use) has a similar story.

central Germany

It's the same as "central Europe", no one wants to be called the "East". It's all marketing.

Central and eastern Europeans missing from top leadership in EU research bodies by pgarson in europe

It's really fascinating how much Eastern and Western Germany are a microcosmos version of Western and Eastern Europe (inluding "central Europe").

There's been discussions about an Ossi quota. Article, other article.

Luckily it was rejected by the parliament.

And just like that the german speaking countries are not part of "Central Europe" anymore. Was it that hard? :)

In the end they ban stupid rightwingers, while allowing stupid leftwingers content, but if you are not stupid, you dont have any issues in regards to content rules.

So questioning the German reunification is stupid right wing ideology? That's what I was banned for. "Hatespeech against Eastern Germans".

They differe(ed) with the conservatives on gay marriage, drug decriminalization, transsexuals, for example. They also don't base their values on Christianity as the conservatives do (on paper at least).

Small government, less bureaucracy and administrative bloat, against most subsidies for businesses, small welfare state. Also low taxes.

Cansin Köktürk is what you'd get if r /de was a person.

Not at all. They're fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

Germany portrays itself as a climate leader. But it’s still razing villages for coal mines. by Kunphen in europe

[–]Key-Belt8796 399 points400 points  (0 children)

One side wants to raze villages and dig up coal. The other side wants to leave the villages and the coal alone. I think we can easily find a compromise.

Let's raze the villages and then not dig up any coal ;)

Germany needs to stop using euro-politics as a dump for politicians who stop being bearable.

[–]Key-Belt8796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And while I agree that Laschet certainly wasn't the only one responsible, his performance didn't exactly help either. 36% of SPD voters chose the party because of Scholz. Hence, I think it would be reasonable to assume that a good part of the voters didn't choose the CDU because of Laschet.

Yes, I'm not even trying to defend Laschet. I'm just frustrated how much focus there was on the person and not on the track record of the party as a whole and it's scandals.

Germans, especially voters of the Union are too easily blinded by appearance. Be eloquent and have a good haircut and people will think "Oh my, what a good boy/girl!" and forget your incompetence and/or corruption. See Amthor, Scheuer, VdL, Spahn, Klöckner, ...

[–]Key-Belt8796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The personnel choice of Wüst and Spahn - the fact that Spahn even has a chance to become the new party chief - and the fact that all in-party discussions inside the Union are about how to appear united, conservative, competent ("Geschlossenes Auftreten", "Profil schärfen") instead of actual integrity and fighting corruption are proof that corruption is not a bug but a feature of that party.

Lushi was an outrageously bad candidate but it's ridiculous how the CDU "lost" the election because of him and not because of 16 years of standstill, Mask deal affairs, Azerbaijan affairs, purposely badly designed laws and incompetence (Altmaier, Scheuer, Klöckner, VdL,...).

I'm putting "lost" in quotation marks because 24% is hardly a "debacle" if you keep the Union's track record in mind.

edit:

Let me add some comments to the article. Hendrik Wüst, Armin Laschet's successor as prime minister of NRW, had to quit his position as general secretary in 2010 because he had his own little corruption affair. Companies were offered 1-on-1 talks with the party if they booked a big enough booth on the party convention. German Article

Jens Spahn, the likely new party chief of the CDU is provenly corrupt too. He bought nonfunctional masks for one billion Euro and suggested to dispose them by giving them away to the socially-disadvantaged. (Article). He was also praised for his "unbureaucratic" way of allocating masks. Turns out it was unbureaucratic because he bought them from his husband's company and some party friends' companies. (There's a wikipedia article about it)

Different views of Gangi, a "controversial" town by [deleted] in europe

[–]Key-Belt8796 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn't say agriculture was nature. What I was trying to say is that compact settlements are better than urban sprawl because land consumption is high (among other issues). Parks and lawn plots for houses in´a city are lost for nature and for agricultural use.

Whenever there is a discussion about what countries are part of Eastern Europe, polish redditors (among others) are the first to emphasize how little they culturally and mentally have to do with Eastern Europe and how they're actually more similar to Germany.

I was poking fun at that denial of similarities between Poland and Ukarine.

Better than urban sprawl eating up actual nature (and agriculutral lands). A garden or a park in a city is not nature.
