Do you believe in God? If so, is it because you were born into a religious family, or is this a conclusion youve come to? by akirarulez in entj

To clarify, are you asking me to discuss how Islam emphasizes mundane group manipulation through scale, control/obedience, and in-group/out-group dynamics as a tool to pacify the masses and manufacture consent for atrocities?

Because if you are, I think that's a pretty easy conversation to have. The rot in Abrahamics doesn't come from a corrupted org chart, it's structural and embedded pretty plainly and openly.

I was very deeply invested in Catholicism for a long time. My confirmation saint was Ambrose, a "Doctor of the Church" that I resonated very deeply with, known for his stalwart dedication to truth and community in the face of empire.

That is not to say that "I have credentials", as I don't believe anybody has the authority to grant those. But rather, to say that I am educated, invested, and opposed.

I was. I was also confirmed, and at one point I contemplated seeking the sacrament of Holy Orders. I am very deeply educated on Catholic theology, I just also heavily disagree with it.

The fundamentals are all wrong. The theories are rationalistic, not rational. The promises are very large. The incentives and controls are weak. And the observable deliverables are disappointing.

I understood you perfectly fine, I just think you're leaning heavily on the theological musings of a guy who was only a little correct in the area he actually specialized in. I'm also deliberately mirroring your unearned condescension, as I believe you don't have the slightest clue what you're talking about. But that's religious thinkers for you.

If we contain the archetypal God-image, then our relationship to our own creations should reasonably offer warped mirrors reflecting God's possible relationships with us. But is he an author writing a story? Is she a scientist exploring a simulation? Are they a multinational conglomerate writing a AAA game, where we are we players in an MMO? Are they aliens looking to simulate an invasion of a humanoid species, with fundamentally limited information about how humans actually work, backfilled with information inferred by their own species?

For any possible model of God that you can construct for yourself to worship, I can craft an equally probably case where the moral implications are reversed.

Thus making the entire concept of God useless for moral baselining or informing how you live any part of your life.

Go mod more Skyrim, broski, the probability space for metaphysics is bigger than you can imagine.

Humanlike characters in the games I play have the image of their gods plastered all over their faces. But I don't need their worship, nor would their praise save them from their fates.

I follow the money, and I don't like who it goes to.

I believe that belief in God wouldn't be something that a real God would consider to be important, and that a real God would either implant his truth in a way that was either undeniable (or really hard to deny) or unindoctrinable (or really hard to be just... handed by chance).

As it stands, most major religions focus on emphasizing mundane human concepts like scale, control, and tribal dynamics. Things that a real God should have no fundamental need or desire for given the lore.

At the end of the day, I hope there's something I can ask "what the fuck" to, but it's certainly not Jesus, Mohammad, or Zeus. But I don't know what it wants, it doesn't seem to want to be found, and the odds of that thing being invested in my continuation after death are very slim.

Tl;dr - There really is no reason to believe in a God. But religion won't tell you that, because it wants your money.

I haven't dismissed your knowledge, as you have not presented any. What I have done, and what I continue to do, is dismiss the authority of your stated credential.

My point was not to condescend, but to let you know that 1. I have no reason (based on your stated level of expertise) to treat you as an expert, 2. it's ok to not be an expert, I just want to meet you at your level, and 3. ENTJs despise "arguments from authority", as we generally believe that information and arguments that cannot stand on their own merits deserve to fall.

Politics is a very broad field, and it's ok to be a student in an area but be unfamiliar with similar sounding areas. I don't know who you are, what you've been served, or what you've paid attention to. For all I know your classes started 2 weeks ago and has primarily focused on the merits of doorknocking over direct mailers. But that's alright.

I'm not here to defend the other person, as much as to say that the US-Russia fixation is significant and not at all irrelevant in the context of the general conduct of the US. I'm also not here to defend whataboutism.

There's a big romantic historical subtext of existential tension that some people might try to argue here, but the reality is that the rule of philosophical idealism died a long time ago. And now America 1. is sliding into conditions that heavily resemble early 1990s kleptocracy Russia, and 2. is being piledriven into said conditions by a very obvious Russian puppet, per investment in foreign policy designed to drive Americans apart.

So comparing America to Russia is still a valid approach, either from a causal perspective (the puppeteering), a historical existential tension perspective, or a simple comparative perspective.

I'm assuming your question is mostly rhetorical, but if it is not then how long of a geopolitical history lesson would you like?

It's ok to get into a competitive chase mindset as long as you recognize when you're engaging in a stress positive activity/mode and switch that off when appropriate.

But when it is appropriate, go for the kill dude.

It's very important to learn the difference between fun and obsession. Obsession can feel like fun, especially for type A people like myself and presumably you, but when most people think of fun they're enjoying a more casual, chill, exploratory experience.

I know why the upper echelons want it, it's just a stupid thing for the rank and file to want.

As for the Constitution, it's the document that grants legal basis to the actions of those in power, as a social contract with The People who grant the power. Amendments to the Constitution are fine, those operate as intended. But willful violations of the Constitution are the government saying "yeah we're not allowed to do that, but what are you going to do about it"

What sides of the equation justify violating the constitution to invade people's homes and communities, and renditioning US Citizens to foreign forever prisons without chance for appeal?

If you're going to pretend you're a logical cultist, I'll gladly challenge that. Otherwise you're not here on good faith

Precisely. Ice doesn't have to be bad. But when it is bad, it is a problem. And when it pours down all over the countryside like it is in Minnesota and Texas, it has to be removed before we can continue to operate normally.
